Thoracic Back Pain... Puzzling Dr. Posted: 11-05-07 15:54pm
I woke up about a month ago in severe back
pain. I am 31 yo female. I had an MRI
done and results completely negative
(didn't even notice my mild Scoliosis,
that's another topic)
Now, after 4-5 hours of sleep, I always
have this horrible pain and cannot get
comfortable, losing sleep. I have to get
up and after I have been up for an hour or
two it feels better. A month later, my
doctor won't give me pain meds anymore.
At first I would take two Darvocet and go
back to bed within 30 mins and now, she
won't refill it.
Before the back pain, about a month, I
noticed some weakness in my right knee
after I sit for a while. When I stand, it
kind of wants to "give out". Still doing
that.
Also, possibly unrelated, I have had some
urge incontinence. Just past two weeks.
Like, all of the sudden I HAVE TO PEEE NOW
and I pee a little before I make it to the
bathroom.
The pain is not worsening, but is the same
as when it began. I am going to PT
currently, and they just gave me back
strengthening exercises, which aren't
helping.
PLEASE someone help me out! What could it
be?

It seems many people who have back pain
also suffer from Scoliosis, or other
problems with the curvature of there spine
such as increased lordosis. (see Thoracic
Back Pain: what worked for you), another
thread in this forum. I know that this is
an subject of controversy among doctors
and researchers, with some believing that
the pain causes the scoliosis which is a
fairly harmless symptom, while others
believe it may be the cause of pain. Some
people have scoliosis, and yet suffer
little or no back pain however it is
unclear whether they will develop pain as
they age or if there scoliosis
progresses.
I think your knee problems may be related,
and indicate that you have structural
problems. There are many different
approaches to treating this kind of
problem PT and strengthening exercises
being one of them. You may need to
persevere and try some different
treatments from different types of
practitioners, if you do be careful you
need someone who is high quality.
