Really Want...
Posted: 11-09-07 16:54pm

My christmas wish list includes ancestral genetic testing. It's around $300. I really want to know my heritage. I could have American-Indian in me but we could never prove it due to my great grandmother lying during the census and saying she was Danish. I never met my grandmother but she looked full blooded Indian. My uncle does as well. My mom looks a little Indian. I don't know what the heck I look like. I heard that a relative was born in WA state but was taken as an Indian slave to somewhere in Vancouver BC. My maiden last name was Adler, which I have heard is a pretty big Jewish name. It would be so cool if I found some African heritage as well. My interest is continually sparked when I hear about people who look as white as can be or as dark as can be actually being a part of a race they never expected. That is just so great!!!

We also had records that my great great something or other was a pretty big general that fought my husband's great great something or other (Robert E Lee). These two people were huge rivals and my husband and I would cease to exist if they killed each other. I know that the DNA testing wouldn't reveal that information but perhaps the Mormons can help me out on that one? Wink They are great with genealogy.

Has anyone had this done? I looked it up on the net and you pay the money and the company ships you a collection sample. My concern is "legitimacy." I would want to go with a pretty well known company because I don't want to get ripped off.

it sounds really interesting. i have seen people like oprah getting this done to see what tribe they were in africa. i think it's debated how accurate the results are though. but if it's just a couple of generations then maybe it would tell more. my ancestors are native canadian (cree) and some scottish on my mom's side. my dad's ancestors were full blooded cree but he doesn't know who his dad was because he was orphaned at 5 months old when his mom died of TB. it's funny because we consider ourselves to be cree but my sister and i both have blond hair and blue/green eyes. i think our features show our heritage though. i have the same high cheekbones and slanted eyes that my great, great grandfather had.

no poster was saying she wanted to know what race her kids father side was...but you cant really tell what race exactly..there are black people all over the world...she wanted detailed to the t..

this testing can show you your roots and lineage but i doubt it will show you color...

My grandmother does Geneology as a hobby, and has that side of the family (my dad's side) tracked REALLY far! I'm pretty much English and Scottish... maybe a little bit of Irish. I don't really know about my mom's side, but they're from England and trace back at least three generations there... maybe Scottish before then, too.

Such diversity, right? Neutral

This is definitely not my area of expertise at all. Thanks for the information. So, what these companies offer is a scam? What about Oprah? There is so much I don't know. I guess I won't spend money on this, yet. At least until I know more. I will ask for my GPS system instead. One that actually tells me streets and to go right or left NOT west or east. I am seriously directionally impaired.

I would like to know more about this, though.

I think it's weird that you ship off a sample of yourself through the mail after you pay. I think I'd be more comfortable in a doctor's office where they take the sample themselves, you know? Neutral

No kidding. I really just want to know my roots or lineage. The whole "shipping off my hair or spit" or whatever they make you ship off seems strange. I wish there was a local company. I live in Boise, so I doubt it. Oh well.

I know the Mormons have helped alot with tracking ancestry. My mom was going to contact the local church for help when she was doing our family tree, but didnt need to. She tracked her side of the family way back. The family tree she made is huge... it takes up a whole wall in our house if we opened it up, and the names are in 8 font. The DNA thing, yes I would stay away from.

GPS huh... which one?.... I got myself one a few months ago.. a handheld... we work with them doing field work alot...

edit: that shipping a part of yourself concerns me...sounds like the DNA thing again

Thanks Bridget. This is exactly the same thing my post was about! What the heck... Rolling Eyes

Ladylee I was saying I want to do the same thing for my son. DNA Ancestry test. I went ahead and ordered it online from the website in my thread. It arrived yesterday. You can use hair samples and stuff I think but for the paternal ancestry test I ordered, they sent me a swab to rub on the inside of jays mouth - the cheek part. I fill in a form send them off and should get the results in 6 weeks.
