Newbie to High Blood Pressure - BP Meds so Quickly?
Posted: 11-09-07 17:20pm

I am just new out of the Military after 30 years. I have secured a civilian doctor recently. On my first visit he took my BP and it was 140/102. Visit 2 (2 weeks later) I had the same BP. I have never had a doctor express concern about my BP, ever. He immediately put me on BP medication (Zestril 20MG). There was no chat about diet, lifestyle etc. Is it normal to put someone on Meds for BP that quickly? My friends seem to think there should have been more monitoring and I think there should have been more discussion on diet etc? Additionally, he put me on CRESTOR for Cholesterol when my count is only between 3 and 4. I am 47, 5'10" 230lbs.

What were the usual blood pressure readings before you visited the doctor?
Do you have morning headaches and headaches during the day?
Do you often feel dizziness or nausea?
Can you noticed some changes in your vision?
Do you usually eat fatty foods?

Thanks for the reply. All has been sorted and I no longer have the original concern. The meds are for Secondary Hypertension as a result of a blood disorder.

Again, Thanks for the reply!

Do you know exactly what blood disorder is causing your hypertension?
Did you start a treatment for underlying disease?

Anemia of unclear etiology can be a reason for secondary hypertension.
Malformed aorta, renal artery stenosis (structural problems of renal artery causing renal hypotension) are some blood vessels disorders related to hypertension.

What are your blood pressure readings now?

Polycytemia is condition with excess production of normal erythrocytes and variable overproduction of leukocytes and platelets. What are like your recent blood tests for RBC count?
Are you experiencing thrombosis and hemorrhage?
Was the type of polycytemia confirmed?

My advice is to find another MD. Your bp is not that high--the diastolic more than the systolic. Strange that the doc did not suggest losing some wt, some activity if sedentary, etc., before jumping to drugs.

You could always try a natural supplement for high blood pressure. The one I use is organic and has no side effects at all.
