Q: Miscarriage Question...
asked by: yankeeguy on November 9th, 2007

My fiancee told me she was pregnant about 6 weeks ago. We went to the Dr. about 3 weeks ago, to confirm. She came out of her exam saying that the Dr. told her she was about 6 weeks pregnant and had a bag of pre-natal vitamins with her. Well, this past week, she said she complained of stomach pains and spotting. She said she believed she had a miscarriage, so we went and got a pregnancy test which came back negative. My question is, is it possible for this test to be negative just 2-3 days after this bleeding began? I dont know if Im just paranoid that she was never pregnant to begin with. Please someone help me, I need FACTS, thank u.

Did you go to the doctor with her? This all sounds highly suspicious. Did she visit the doctor when her stomach started hurting and she began bleeding? Whenever miscarriage is suspected the woman NEEDS to go see the doctor.

Generally your body will hold onto the pregnancy hormones for a week or two. A pregnancy test will get lighter and lighter as time goes by.

Another thing, generally you get a prescription for pre-natal vitamins. Doctor's don't generally hand them out. She should have also had a 'pregnancy confirmation' note from her doctor.

These are all common things.

Wear condoms if you want to prevent this kind of thing from happening in the future! Wink Good luck!

I went with to Dr. with her the first time, when we "confirmed" she was pregnant, but I didnt go into the room with her. However I was there when she walked out with practically a shopping bag of pre-natal vitamins (5 day samples, including Primacare ONE). It seemed fishy to me, I just want to know if its possible for this to have occured. Seems like alot of trouble to have gone through to lie, especially the part where she had to tell her parents. It doesnt make sense to me...

I'm curious, actually, why you would post this question on a message board... obviously this is nagging at you in some way. To sign up for a message board just to post your questions about the person you plan to spend your life with.

Why didn't you go into the doctor's office with her? Many fathers go to the first pre natal appointment. Did she get an ultrasound? When was her next appointment date? Generally women schedule their next appointment right then and there for, usually, 4 weeks from then.

Another thing I'm curious about... why when she started 'miscarrying', did the 2 of you go get another pregnancy test? Why not go back to the doctor? In the case of miscarriage - sometimes they get very severe. A woman can bleed to death if surgery isn't done. In fact, if there is prolonged bleeding at all, the doctor will do a D & C to remove any tissue that hasn't yet come out. This is a necessary procedure. A simple home pregnancy test doesn't do this.

I dont have the answers to these questions. Honestly Im pretty new to all this, I just want to know if its possible. She was about 10 weeks, and was spotting for about 2-3 days, then we took the pregnancy test. I'd just like to know if this is possible.

It is unlikely. Take her to the doctor because she needs medical attention - especially if the spotting was 1 or 2 days. Spotting in early pregnancy can be very common. But coupled with the negative pregnancy test, you should be concerned. She maybe be pregnant. It may be a 'missed' miscarriage. In which case she needs to see a doctor!

No. You don't have to answer any of my questions. But you already were thinking these things or you wouldn't have come and asked in an environment where no one knows you.

Good luck!

We dont live together, actually we live kinda far away, so its impossible for me to go with her to the doctor. However, she did say that she went to the Dr. the next day after the "miscarriage" and he said she had had a miscarriage, and that everything was passing on its own and she would be ok.

Now you say unlikely, but that still means its possible right?

You obviously have doubts as the credibility of her story or you wouldn't have put miscarriage in quotation marks.

It normally takes a minimum of two blood tests to verify a miscarriage. And a few follow ups to check hormone levels. The doctor needs to confirm that the hcg is out of her system.

Would she have a reason to lie about this?

Listen to your heart. It is telling you something or you wouldn't be asking.

I will tell you this: when you are 10 weeks pregnant, you do not spot for 1 or 2 days and have a negative pregnancy test. You would BLEED a lot. And it would hurt badly. Not only that, but you would be terrified of what was happening.

Who is paying the doctor's bills? (you don't have to TELL me) Maybe, if you were paying them, you might see what they had to say.

Yes. There can be hormones in your body for weeks afterwards that cause home pregnancy tests to come back positive.

Do you mean she has lied before without a reason? Or that people in general don't need a reason to lie?

Apparently he thinks something in her story isn't adding up right.

Yankeeguy, we all know our own truths if we listen hard enough. Just as you felt the need to ask anonymously on a message board if this is possible... you know in your heart what the answers are already. Wink

I will tell you this. When I went to the doctor initialy because my husband and I decided to start trying to conceive. I was given a 7 day trial of Primacare (not One) and a prescription for 12 months worth. So, please do not let the fact that she had prenatal vitamins sway your opinion. Prenatal vitamins are not ONLY prescribed to pregnant women.

I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks and i had to go for blood work for 3 weeks to make sure my numbers where dropping. at 3 weeks i still had hormones in me my number was low but it still showed. So i think when she took a test 3 days after the bleeding started it still would have showed positive

every time i've miscarried i had to go to the hospital so i wouldnt know if just a little spotting would provide a negative test. i do know that once u do start bleeding and it is confirmed that your going to have a miscarriage that you dont actually have one until your hcg levels drop below 50. but at six weeks that could happen in a couple of days.
