Q: 8 Weeks Pregnant No Heart Beat

I was looking for advice and came across this forum. I went for my first u/s yesturday and i am 8 weeks pregnant. the sonographer said the baby measured 8 weeks but could not see a heart beat. i am not sure of my last period so i am not sure about the dates and i have told them this. my doctor then said I had to get a D&C because it's a bad pregnancy and scheduled me three days later. she said my cervix is closed and i will not miscarry naturally. I have no blood loss or cramping or signs of misscarriage. shouldn't the doctor check my blood levels first to make sure they are going down?? shouldn't they do one more u/s to make sure they didn't miss something. i am not trying to be unrealistic but my baby is normal size it did not stop growing as of yet i guess i just feel like the doctor is giving up to soon. i don't know what to do. i have been crying and upset for two days i am devasted this is my first pregnancy. can someone please give me advice??

yep i don't know either. i am thinking of going to a new doctor's office all together but i just wanted to know what others thought about the situation. i dont want to be holding on if there is no hope. this is hard enough as it is.

Because at 8 weeks the heartbeat can be seen clearly through an U/S. It is unfortunate but your baby is not alive .

I might ask for a second opinion. I don't know though, you should have been able to see the heartbeat. They could have passed over it maybe???

Let us know what you find out

I would ask for a 2nd opinion since you're not 100% sure of your dates. Maybe you ovulated late and are only 6 weeks along. Measurements in early pregnancy can be tricky (just a few millimeters more can put your measurements significantly ahead). Especially if you are having 2nd thoughts or feel there's a chance they might have missed something, I would see a 2nd doc and get another opinion. If a D & C is needed, waiting a few more days shouldn't hurt. I hope you find some answers. It would be tough to go through a D&C if you always have doubts in your mind afterward. Was the ultrasound abdominal or transvaginal? Usually in early pregnancy, the transvaginal ultrasounds give better and clearer details, so if you had an abdominal u/s instead, I would definitely get another opinion.

this is really hard to discuss but i doubt the technician would have missed it. I am confused why he didnt re-do one a few days later.

Thank you for all the responses. I have decided to get a second opinion and have an appointment today with another ultrasound at a new doctor's office. If there is no heart beat and this doctor says there is no hope, I will get the D&C tomorrow. Will keep you updated please pray for me i hope my baby is ok.

well just came back from my appointment and bad news again...no heart beat or cardio activity detected. i scheduled the d&c saturday in their office because i felt more comfortable there...my reg. ob keeps you awake during the d&c which i wasn't happy about. last hope is saturday when they do the ultrasound right before the procedure but i am not expecting much. i will try again as soon as possible. my heart goes out to everyone that is going through this you are not alone

I am so sorry for your loss. I have had 3 miscarriages and have had to have 2 D&C's. You made the right decision going somewhere else. I could not imagine experiencing that awake. It is a pretty easy procedure physically to recover from. Emotionally it will take some time but I promise you it will get easier. I started trying each time right away. I am now on my 4th pregnancy and am 7 weeks 3 days along. Still very nervous but saw the heartbeat. Good luck to you and if you need to talk, let me know.
