I started experiencing should pain in my
right shoulder about 5 months ago. It has
always been intermittent. Sometimes it is
unbearable, sometimes it is a constant
pain. The pain seems to be in the top of
my shoulder where my arm meets the
shoulder. When it had gotten so bad that I
could not play basketball with my daughter
or throw the football with my son without
being in pain for days after, I decided to
see my PCP. He assumed since the pain was
5 months old, I needed an MRI. After the
MRI the radiologist's report stated I had
no ligament and/or joint damage in the
shoulder. He did however see a possible
bone marrow edema/bone lesion/small
fracture in my clavicle in the shoulder.
The PCP doc determined I needed a bone
scan. So today after the nuclear medicine
bone scan that radiologist sees nothing
abnormal in the scan of the shoulder. I
can feel the shoulder pop when moving it.
I am now almost $3K into this thing and
still have no explanation of what is going
on or what we are going to do. Insurance
has picked up the bulk of the bill, but I
just need some help on questions to ask
now. I have to wait on the PCP to refer me
to an orthopedic, or the insurance doesn't
pay. Thanks!!!

Did the MRI test for muscle damage? You
mentioned the ligament, but there are
quite a few muscles that join up in the
shoulder joint. Also, have you identified
the exact rotation that causes the pain?
(internal v. external rotation for
example)

My shoulder problem didn't show up on
anything. I had three MRIs, an Ultra
sound, EMG, X-rays, everything. It took
four years to diagnois that I had A
traumatic Multidirectional instabilityand
only because they finally went and looked
inside to see what's wrong. You might not
have that but make sure they look at your
neck and if nothing else shows up don't
wait long before you ask them just to
look. The pain might spread.
Did your shoulder pop before your arm
started hurting? Also, the instability
sometimes won;t show up on MRis because
you're laying flat. Mine was so loose the
surgeon could just lift it up with no
resistance.
