Sudden Strabismus Onset In Adults Posted: 11-17-07 14:23pm
My friends mom, 45-50 years of age,
suffers from chronic headaches. Recently
she was driving home and experienced
blurred vision. When she got home the
blurred vision continued and when examined
had sudden onset of stabismus (cross
eyed). A CAT scan revealled nothing and
she is booked with a Neurologist for an
MRI in January. However, reading more
about her symptoms I believe it may be ION
(Ischemic Optic Neuropathy) and fear it
will only get worse over time. She has
had no head trauma and no history of
illness. She does have a thyroid
condition. Is it just a matter of a
swollen/inflammed optic nerve which she
could corrct with steroids or is it more
serious? She continues to have blurred
vision, cross eyed and severe headaches.
Please let me know what it might be and if
my diagnosis is correct. I would say it
may be a severe case of glaucoma, but
there is evidence of strabismus. Please
let me know. Thank you. Rob

For how long she has headaches?
Was she experiencing daily headaches for
long period?
What type and character are the
headaches?
Did she complain of the following while
doing close work along with headaches
(eyestrain, double vision, squinting,
rubbing, closing or covering an eye, hard
to concentrate)?

She has had the headaches for several days
as she suffers from this on a regular
basis. The strabismus was sudden and
severe. The pain starts in the occipital
lobe and moves to the front. No
complaints of any other problems.
However, we have covered the one problem
eye and it seems to help. We are checking
her thyroid as it may be a contributing
factor.

Are her headaches more intensive in the
mornings?
Has she become more irritable in a mean
time?
Does she have uncoordinated gait?
Is she experiencing vomiting?
Checking her thyroid gland is a good idea,
because some of thyroid conditions
(Grave's Disease) can cause strabismus.
