Depo Shot- body messed up b/c of birth control ?
Posted: 11-18-07 13:17pm

i was on the depo for about a year. I decided that it made me sick and i didn't like how i was feeling from it so i was off of it for a year. it's been almost 2 years since i have been off the shot in dec. I started taking the pill to help with my periods because i would have them for a whole month and then a maybe if i was lucky a week break. I just wanted to know if my body is really messed up from the shot and from me now taking the pill b/c i have really bad cramps, always tired and feel sick but i get my periods very heavy and longer then a week. i just want to know if it has something to do with being on the shot or is there something wrong with me? i also want to know that when we are ready to get our family started will i be able to or did the shot do something to my body?

I Was On the Depo For About 9 Months
Posted: 11-18-07 18:05pm

I was on the depo for about 9 months 2005-2006 and didn't get periods until almost a year later to this day they are soo screwed! they also put me on pills but i am ready to start a family so i got off of them and the doc told me that my body would just have to work its self out and that there is noting wrong with me in the conciving area but since my periods are screwed so are my ovulation periods i am fixing to try ovulex and have heard wonderful things about it but also bad things i guess it just depends on the person.... i have also heard about the depo making women infertal and also about women who have gotten preg. right off of the bat.. you might want to go to the doc and get some tests run. the depo in my personal opinion is awful awful awful i went from a size 4 to size 17 in almost a month! it was awful!! hope this helps..

Your bodies are NOT screwed up from Depo. The few cases of severe reactions/infertility are just that: VERY FEW.

It is common and safe to wait up for a year for your period to return; that's because Depo is a long-lasting hormonal birth control and thus takes longer to clear from your system. I don't know why that bothers people so much.

Yes It Did Screw Me Up!
Posted: 11-19-07 10:51am

i used to have regular periods until taking the depo then afterwards they were no longer regular the doc. told me it was because of the depo so yes it did screw up my cylces and my body because that was also told to me by the doctor and maybe infertillity caused by the depo may be few and far between but when the doctor said that it screwed me up like it did i was so scared that i would never be able to have children and did all the research on the internet that i could find and that is part of what i found and i was just trying to be helpful

Temporarily, for a year or so. That's a side effect you should have been informed of before ever getting on the shot. It causes temporary infertility after getting off of it for about a year.

The actual cases of women becoming totally infertile are extremely low, just like the number of women dying from blood clots on other birth controls is low. People just like to freak out about depo for some reason. It is no more risky than other kinds of birth control.

Oh boy, the internetz! Please take anything read online with a grain of salt; it's a great source of information... and MISinformation. You're most likely to hear all the horror stories online and none of the good ones. Conspiracy theories are everywhere online.

ok lady just drop it like i said before just trying to help... i know that the internet can produce false information i am not retarded! have you ever been on the depo do you really know how it feels?! and besides everyone is different what may have been right for you or not concerning for you does not mean it wasn't for someone else. i did not come here to fight i came here to find support and ideas and to give my two sense to try and help someone else and because something is extreamly low doesn't mean it is improbable. and besides you don't know all the details of everyone before getting on birthcontrol what if it wasn't a choice what if it wasn't up to you what to get so don't be so quick to judge!

Wow chill ladies. I was on the depo two different times. I no troubles the first time had to switch because of change in ins. I ended up getting pregnant while on another pill about 3 months later. The second time I had nothing until the last couple shots. I had to change and my body was very screwed up my dr said it was from changing off the depo not the shot its self. Any bc can cause you to have screwed up periods it's just how you react. To the first who posted this you really should go in to your dr. Monitor your peroids (write them down) so you can show your dr and monitor how you feel and all that. That is what i did and he ended up doing some other tests just to make sure there wasn't anything else. I have now switched to a pill Lo ovral and I'm having headaches (i already have problems with headaches and migrains) and acne problems. So we will see. I havn't even been on for a month so we'll see what happens later. Like Eiri said it is a long acting bc so it can take a little bit to get your body right again it just depends on your body. Like I said since its been awhile you need to talk to your dr. You may just need a switch on your bc!

Yes. I am on Depo right now, so I really do know how it feels. What's your point?

It is usable for most women, otherwise it would not be legal. It does not cause permanent infertility in most women, otherwise it would not be legal. I am sorry you are one of the small percents of women who have had trouble with Depo, but the hype about it is far worse than the actual drug.

Actually yes it does. If the chances of something are low, it is unlikely and improbable that it has happened. I know you came here for support and I thought dispelling frightening myths about a drug was quite supportive, as it eases the fears of many women who have sometimes been outright lied to about their birth control.

I am not judging you; I don't know where you're getting that from.

If you were forced into taking any medicine, you can sue. You have freedoms as an independent person and one of those freedoms is to refuse any treatment for non-lethal conditions. Heck, I think you can even refuse treatment for lethal conditions: Jehova Witnesses refuse any blood transfusions. So if someone forced you to take birth control, you need to take action against them. They had no right to violate your body!

Look lady I said drop it! If something was wrong that person needed to go to the doctor. And we "supportive people" have turned this poor womans question onto a wresteling word match and so if a won fight is what you want you got it lady I don't care anymore.

Sorry Aly just go to the doctor and see if anything is wrong.

And who beside Eiri like I said in the above don't be so quick to judge why someone took it or who made them take it you don't have all the details so just stop. And I was merely suddgesting that complications do happen and that she might need to go to the doctor. And as for you I hope you have fin on your little miricle shot and that it doesn't screw your body up because yes it does once you get off it and that you don't have any problems! Good luck and good bye!

Please do not post in all caps... If you could edit your post that would be lovely. Otherise I'll report it to a mod so that they can remove the capital letters. It's the equivalent of screaming at us, and I do not appreciate being screamed at.

The other poster had very good information for you and she was not judging you in any way shape or form. I really can't understand where you're coming from with that.

NO ONE is judging you. You're very paranoid :/

Depo is not a "miracle shot". Most women are informed and aware of the risks when taking it.

Depo does NOT PERMANANTLY destroy women's bodies or their fertility. Please stop spreading that lie. If it caused that much harm it would not be legal, period. Norplant caused a lot of problems and was quickly taken off the market. Depo has been on the market much longer than Norplant was. It is people like you retelling horror stories like they are the results every woman will get that gives Depo its bad reputation. Please stop ruining a perfectly good form of birth control.

Plenty of women have "messed up" cycles and trouble with fertility after getting off of pills as well.

I am not judging you for taking Depo: I am judging you for being ignorant about it.

YOU have turned this into an argument; you are the one yelling and you are the one being defensive. Do not blame us for your faults. We are simply refuting your uneducated "facts" with the real facts so that women are not confused about Depo.
