Exercise With Hip Replacements
Posted: 11-20-07 11:15am

Has anyone heard about use of an elliptical trainer for exercise with hip replacements? I'm 45 and had one hip replaced at 40 and the other at 44 due to unexplained arthritis. (first symptoms during pregnancy at age 30) Obviously, the goal at this age is to make these things last! I really don't like to swim and have found the elliptical to be better exercise than a stationary bike for me.

The irony: keeping weight off is good for longevity of the new joints, but exercise can increase wear and tear which decreases longevity.

So, what's the best exercise if you eliminate swimming? And how much?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Hey Soupstone - I too had a hip replaced at the relatively young age of 39. i use the elliptical trainer with no pain and have also found that the Step Mill (the one that looks like a small escalator) to be great for strength as well as cardio. But the best exercise I have found is ooutdoor cycling. I bought a road bike about 18 months ago and it has been the best exercise I have found period...much more enjoyable than the stationary variety.

Anyway, I hope this helps you out. Let me konw if you have any questions.
