Q: What Should I Expect At My 2nd Appointment?

My 1st drs appt was on Halloween and they took my blood, made me pee in a cup, took my temp/blood pressure, weighed me, listened to my heart, did a pap, examined me "down there," did a vaginal u/s, and gave me a bunch of lit to read. Of course they asked a hundred questions and inputted them in the computer on top of a bunch of paperwork.

My question is, what should I expect for my 2nd appointment? It's on Thursday this week, and I'll be 11w 4d at the time. Obviously they should be done with all the paperwork and gathering information, and I won't get another u/s until January when I find out the sex. What will they do this time?

Thanks!

Thanks Suzy... I REALLY hope I don't have to get anymore blood taken:( I don't particularly care for needles, and I've already had 10 TUBES taken since I've been pregnant! Now I just can't wait until I start showing:D Funny thing is, my 3rd trimester will start ON my boyfriend's 18th birthday(March 23rd)! What a birthday present!

I think it depends on what you did at your first appointment... my 2nd one we listened to the heartbeat, talked a little about what was going on with the baby's development, and drew some blood, and set up an ultrasound. That's about it, I think... I can't remember very well XD

this is what you do at every appointment:

-pee in a cup
-weight
-blood pressure
-listen to the heartbeat
-measure your fundal height (but that doesn't start until like 18 weeks or something)
-questions and concerns

I guess my main question is: will they be looking "down there" this time? My boyfriend wants to come and I don't really care to have them "play" around with my vagina with him in the room! It's just awkward....

if you had an exam and a pap at your first visit, no.

i think this is how it generally is for everyone, the only times you'll need to undress are the first appointment for pap and exam, around 36-38 weeks for the group b strep swab, and towards the end some doctors like to check for dilation and effacement (mine does not).

i never wanted my husband there for exams either. believe me though, he'll be seeing a lot worse when you're in labor!

I only had to pee in a cup for my first appointment. The big diffrence between the 1st and 2nd appointment is you won't have to be naked lol those kind of exams should be over until you're further along. Like the others said bp, weight and listening to the heartbeat are the things you should expect.

I only had blood drawn 2 times. 1st time was my 1st appointment then the 2nd time I was 27 weeks and had blood drawn for my sugar test. Oh yeah and they drew maybe 3 tubes in the hospital right before I delivered.

Yeah Suzy is right most appointments will all be the same thing!

bloodwrok isn't too bad really, i had a huge fear of needles (you wouldn't think it from the piercings lol) but now i'm over it. i had the usual bloods taken at my first appointment then my 28 week bloods and then i had an extra at 30 something weeks because they thought i had something wrong with my liver. I didn't have any taken while in labour but i had blood taken every two hours after i gave birth for two days because of complications. Needless to say 'm over my needle fear!

they should have you peeing in a cup everytime to test for any infections that you could get during pregnancy!

Ah I've had more blood drawn during this pregnancy than I've had in my whole life put together. I got blood drawn at my 1st visit, for my glucose test at 28weeks, then at 30 weeks, and then every week after that.

And it's fun when they can't get blood out of one arm, so they try the other! Wink I'm so not afraid of needles...esp not after this.

update: so...at my appointment they 1) made me pee in a cup 2) weight/blood pressure 3) listened to baby's heartbeat....it was all quick and painless:D Baby's heart rate was good and strong between 150-160. I did however test positive for leukocytes(white blood cells) in my urine so they're sending it off for further testing. And I told the Dr about how I was waking up in the middle of the night with horrible pain in my wrist and she said it sounds like carpal tunnel so drink lots of water and stay away from salt.

Hearing the heart beat was amazing! At first(while she was putting the jelly on my belly) she was like "sometimes it takes awhile to find it so don't be alarmed." However it only took her a second and I could hear it loud and clear:D Oh and I forgot to mention, I haven't gained anything these past 3 months. I've actually lost a pound... And also, I found out they consider me "at risk"??? I don't know why...I'm gonna ask next time.
