Has anyone here had surgery for an open
bite? Or any type of bite.
Does anyone have any before and after
photos?
I have an open bite and need to decide
whether to go and have major jaw surgery
or simply get cosmetic implants put in to
advance the area which is set back.
I'm concerned about making a big mistake
as jaw surgery is irreversible and if I
dont like the outcome I'm in trouble. I
suppose i could always have some cosmetic
enhancements afterwards to improve myself
should I be unhappy with the outcome.
Jaw Surgery or Cosmetic Implants?
I have a deadline and need to decide. Any
help appreciated! Any before and after
photos appreciated!
Thanx!

i had surgery for open posterior
apertognathia--open posterior bite. do you
have tmd? if so this would probably be
better over in the tmj forum. have you
tried anytnig else--like neuromuscular
dentistry? that could work. i dont have
any before or after picts though.

Thank u v much for your reply. What is
tmd? Where's the forum?
Whats neuromuscular dentistry? Basically I
have an open bite - in a normal bite the
upper teeth overlap the lower. In an open
bite upper and lower dont overlap at all -
when u bite the upper and lower meet but
do not overlap.
I sort of would like to see before and
after pictures to measure how radical the
person's apperance changes. Of course all
operations come with a risk and the longer
u r under anaesthetic the more risk. The
open bite operation is 3 hours. And 1 and
half yrs of braces beforehand. If I had
implants to advance the bit above the
mouth and a mouth implant I suppose it
would be a quick fix and correct the
flatness of the lower face an open bite
causes. My main concern is that the
operation is really a lottery and one
cannot tell how the outcome will be
exactly...If Im unhappy with the outcome I
will be unhappy. I am in a dilema because
I have one chance to do this jaw surgery
if I decide not to proceed I may regret
not going for the opportunity - Yet if I
go ahead I may dislike the result.

Hi Dyan
Did it change u dramatically the
operation? Did u find it weird looking at
the new you? How radical was the change in
your appearance? Did u have the operation
because of medical reasons or u wanted to
improve your looks?
Were u concerned with the risk having the
operation?
R u pleased with the result? Have u had
any further surgery?
How did people react to the new you!?
Thanx!

i pretty much look the same as i did
before. however if there is something that
needs to be fixed they will fix it. i had
it because i have sever
tmd--temporomandibular joint disorder(the
forum is listed under tmj) its problems
with the jaw. I havent had further surgery
and im very happy with the result.
i have after pictures but not before--well
i do but not on the computer. actually yes
i do but its in a group.
i was worried rather scared simply because
the notion was new to me---i wasnt really
worried because my doctor is more of a
friend and i trust him completly.
a neuromuscular dentist would put the jaw
in the correct position to where the jaw
and the muscles are in the right place
giving you a functional bite wich sounds
like what the problem is.
