Utterly Constipated after taking painkillers - ideas?
Posted: 12-01-07 20:25pm

These last few days I've been taking extra painkillers because of exceptionally large amounts of pain. Well, it looks like I'm paying the price now. This is the 5th day I have't had a bowel movement, and the scary thing is I don't even have to go! I have been eating plenty so...

I know one guaranteed cure that I've tried a few times is a 1/2 cup of olive oil with a 1/2 cup of organge jiuce (albeit you'll get 4-5 oily shits after the first needed one), but I tried it today and gagged as soon as it hit my mouth; so that option's out.
I ate many appricots and prunes today, then took some senacot, but all that's done is make it so I can feel a bit of intestinal movement now. Nothing has reached the end yet.

I've asked doctors about this before and all they ever say is "eat lots of fiber".

Anything else I could try eating? Also what consequences to my health could come of this?

Any time I have had to take narcotic pain killers for any length of time my doctor has always told me to get Colace and take it regularly as long as I am taking the pain killer. Generic or store brands are quite cheap. It works great for me.

Yep this is what you need to do whenever you are taking narcotics. Take a pill for a pill....lol

even a stool softener will help.....but this is normal w/pain killers

I just got out of the hospital myself. I too am on painkillers. Try milk of magnesia, like Philips. You can get it over the counter at the drug store. Good luck!

You laugh! : Very
Happy But sometimes a person ends up taking more pills for the side effects of pills than the number of prescriptions they need! In the hospital after my liver transplant I was taking 24 pills a day. Only 8 of those were primary prescriptions! The rest were for side effects of prescriptions! LOL!
