chest pains + tightness - Did I Have a Myocardial Infarction? Posted: 12-02-07 18:57pm
So, here I am at work, wondering if I just
had a heart attack even though I'm not too
sure. A little about me:
21 years old, male; somewhat active (I
just started getting into riding a bike
again, and I lift weights occasionally); I
don't smoke; I eat fairly right for the
most part, although I've never had my
cholesterol levels checked; I haven't had
my blood pressure checked too recently,
but I've usually been fine in the blood
pressure area; I don't lead a stressful
life.
I suppose I have somewhat of a genetic
predisposition for heart disease. My
grandfather on my mother's side had a
heart attack in his 30's and has diabetes,
but that's about the extent of my family
history. I also seem to have inherited
most of my genes from my father, as I act
and look almost exactly like him--not sure
if that helps/matters though.
So, I'm at work and about an hour ago I
got sharp pains when I breathed in too
deeply. A few minutes after that a
somewhat constricting pain surrounded my
chest. I could still move around fine, but
at the expense of exacerbating the
problem. This was about the extent of the
problem. After about 40 minutes it started
to lessen, although it's still there even
now, and it's been about an hour and a
half since it first started.
I had no other symptoms other than these
(which I suppose happen to be the
predominant symptoms of a myocardial
infarction). I checked my pulse during
this time and was getting a pretty steady
60 bpm.
Anyone have any idea if I just had a heart
attack, or is it something else?
I'm also somewhat worried about the health
insurance dilemma. I recently had to drop
a class at my college, and for the first
time since going to college I've dropped
below a full load (12 units). I'm now at 9
units, and I'm off my father's health
insurance policy. I know that if you go to
the emergency room that the medical
practitioners have to treat you, even if
you're destitute/homeless and without any
way to pay. My problem is this: even
though I'm off my father's health
insurance, would my family still be forced
to pay since I still live with my folks?
Thanks in advance to any who can help.

I also forgot to mention that I haven't
gotten much sleep in the past few days and
the only thing I had each morning was a
monster energy drink (tons of caffeine and
sugar, I know). Could drinking this have
had any impact? I'm also not obese. I'm
6'1 and 160 pounds.
My health insurance provider is also
Kaiser, an HMO.

I now think I probably actually just have
a really bad pulled/strained muscle in my
abdominal/chest area, although I don't
know how this happened exactly. the pain
has been persisiting for about 7 hours
now, but it let up after about an hour or
so of just sitting in a comfortable
position, but right now it seems worse.
