migraine treatment not working ~ doctors push drugs ~ ideas? Posted: 12-04-07 14:34pm
I have had migraines since I was 5yrs and
all doctors do is push drugs. Mine are so
bad that I have to sleep them off with
800mg of Advil. I get sick light bothers
me and noise is the big one.
I think something is really wrong, but the
doctors say that it is treatable with
drugs but the drugs prescribed will not
even touch them.

Have you thought of having acupuncture
treatment?
Some people find it very helpful.

I have always been skeptical for
acupuncture. Does it hurt?

I've had fairly frequent migraines for
about 30 yrs. Everything from mild to
feeling like my hair was on fire. From a
couple of hours to a month long. From
just a queezy stomach to throwing up
repeatedly for hours. Once I got up to
use the bathroom and my arm went numb and
I passed out.
If you can't find a medicine that helps,
it's really hard to get rid of. Sounds
like you're already lying down in a dark,
quiet room. I'm assuming you've tried ice
on your head/face. Caffeine can help,
because migraines are vascular headaches.
The pain is caused by expanded blood
vessels in the head pressing on
surrounding tissue, plus the expanded
blood vessels leak toxins as well.
Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor; it reduces
the expansion.
Does the Advil take it away? I can almost
always almost completely or completely
relieve it now with Fiorecet, aka Esgic
Plus, which I hit upon a couple of years
ago. I don't mind using whatever drug
works. It's better than the pain. The
herb feverfew is supposed to help, but it
did nothing for me.
Can you tell when one is coming? I'll
usually start to notice lights seeming
brighter, and I get stupider, sometimes
slurred speech and feel weak, one time I
went through a red light that I could have
sworn had turned green. And then of
course there are the really obvious signs,
called prodrome or aura--the optical
migraine. I've had a few varieties of
them, always only on one side of my field
of vision, in both eyes.
The first kind I had was like looking at
twinkling white lights through shattered
glass. The next few times it was like a
glassy, shiny transparent letter C or
backwards C. After that it's always been
the C but filled in with black, white,
turquoise and yellow vibrating zig-zags
which over the course of about 20 minutes
moves outward and becomes more like a
sideways V.
Are you aware of what the common triggers
can be? Chocolate, citrus fruit, wine,
cheese, meats processed with nitrites like
ham, hot dogs, bacon, luncheon meats.
More or less sleep or caffeine than you're
used to. Fluctuation of female hormones.
Sudden exertion. And it can be caused OR
cured by sexual orgasm.

As Florida288 said it's caused by expanded
blood vessels and pressure and what not
but this is caused by stress. Migraines
generally happen when the stressful event
is over though... usually on a Friday or
Saturday after your work week or study.

The researchers from a recent study in
Denmark have concluded that acupuncture
offers a valuable relief, being equipotent
to some migraine drugs in the influence on
frequency and duration (but not severity)
of attacks, and superior in terms of
negative side-effects.
