Would You Adopt This Baby?

The issue of abortion is not a simple
black and white problem. There are many
layers and many factors which have to be
taken into account when discussing it.
For example, take a junkie on the streets
of any major city. THis person shuffles
back and forth between she;ters and flop
houses. One night while she is passed out
she is raped. She falls deeper into
despair and does more and more drugs.
three or four months later she recognizes
the fact that she has not had a period and
has put on some weight. She also
recognizes that she has been sick more
than usual. She goes to a clinic, gets
tested and finds out she's pregnant. She
also finds out she has AIDS and knows that
her baby will probably have AIDS too. She
can't afford an abortion, as she is
homeless and has no money. SHe goes ahead
and continues the pregnancy and goes into
labor 6 weeks early, delivering a 4 1/2
pound baby with breathing problems. BAby
is HIV + and a drug addicted baby who
screams and screams from the pain of
withdrawl. This baby might grow up to
have a normal life, but the odds are
stacked against him. He will have a
significantly lower IQ than other kids his
age, if not some serious mental
retardation. He could have a spina bifida
from poor maternal nutrition in utero. He
will have attention and anger problems
which will give him the label of ADD or
ADHD. He will have mood disturbances,
violent outbursts and his chances of
becomeing a criminal one day are very
high. THese things occur even in light of
serious psychological interventions that
he will have throughout his life. Do you
want to adopt her drug addicted baby? I
think not. The facct is, nobody will
adopt her drug addicted and malformed
baby. Thisi is why I believe adoption is
not an option in all cases.

You're right. People want perfect
everything so they probably would not
adopt this child. I don't think many
people would want to adopt this baby. But
your story made me feel so bad for the
baby I want to adopt it.. Good point

Awww thanks!! I too feel bad for this
child. But this would have been a great
chance for the state to step in and
provide this woman an abortion and some
help.

To be quite frank, I think many pro-lifers
do not care about women like this and it
will all just revert back to it being her
fault for being a scumbag or whatever.

While I feel very badly for the child, I
would honestly NEVER adopt it. It would
take too much away from the child I
already have. The government will pay a
lot more money in healthcare and foster
homes for the sick child than they would
have paid for an abortion.
btw, I also think it is beyond sick to
force that baby into this world just to
suffer immensely and to most probably die
of AIDS. It would be much more humane to
stop the embryonic cells from developing
into a fetus, to stop the growth before
the brain is formed to the point of
achieving consciousness.

I didn't see that Mom wanted an abortion,
just that she couldn't afford one. Just a
tiny point, but in my prochoice mind it
makes a difference.
To deviate slightly from the point you are
making very well sillyakchick, I would
never advocate for abortion for another
woman because of what may or may not
happen healthwise to the child post birth.
I would present the most accurate
information I had with no sway one way or
the other.

I don't know, i was lucky to have a baby
who is perfectly healthy and thriving. I
would love to adopt this baby. I would
only ever consider adopting children in
this circumstance one my own were old
enough to understand why they were like it
and would help though

In a heartbeat this baby deserves a loving
family just like anyother baby does my boy
was born at 30 weeks and we were lucky
until at 12 week old he contacted
meningitis and epilepsy he had a 7 minute
fit resulting in cerebral palsy and was
perscribed phenobarnitone a highly
addictive drug so having held him and
loved him when he was eventually weaned of
medication i guess i may be biased yes it
is hard work having a disabled child but
he deserves a loving family just like the
baby in the op scenario

Well...I see a point. It must be hard to
have and love a baby who looked like
someone who raped you.

The mother can't keep the baby Smarty, so
that's why it's being given up for
adoption. Her "love" for it has nothing to
do with this case, since if she was smart
enough, she probably would have aborted if
she'd had the chance. That's what I got
from this story.
No one should have to suffer like that
baby does.

Exactly, and this point is overlooked too
often.

So you think she should have been aborted?
If a person is suffering then they commit
suicide that is okay? Silly

A born person cannot kill a born person,
that is murder and that is why suicide
is illegal, you are literally murdering
yourself.
Yes, I think in this case that poor baby
should have been aborted before it was old
enough to feel pain.

Yes, I think a person should be allowed to
commit suicide if that is their wish.
What are they going to do, arrest their
dead body? Silly indeed.

I don't think suicide (the failed kind) is
actually illegal in most places anymore.
You might have to undergo medical
observation briefly to check your mental
and physical health, but you won't go to
jail.

Well I think it's being treated more as a
mental emergency these days (as it should
be) and so the focus is on finding out why
the person wants to die and helping them
so they can have a good life again.

So you guys think that choice is better
than life in suicide?

I think that stopping cells while they are
still part of a woman's body and have no
consciousness, no sentience of any kind,
no capacity to feel or know anything, is
better than letting it grow, be born, and
suffer.
