Drinking While Pregnant?

Hello, I want to know if it is safe to
drink while pregnant. Now please do not
yell at me. I know this may be a stupid
question and if I was pregnant I would
never consider drinking. I am asking
because my friend is having a beer right
now and she is 6 1/2 months pregnant. She
feels that its okay to have a beer every
now and again or a glass of wine once a
month. IS this true. now I know that
some people are very strong in their
beliefs and this is unthinkable, but what
about scientifically and health wise?
Thanks guys. And again this is not for
me. I am not pregnant.

I think an occassional glass of wine is
ok, but I would definitely stay away from
the beer. Of course, while I was pregnant
I abstained from all of it, just to be
safe.

I think that is up to your dr. When I was
closeto the end my dr told me to go home
and have a glass of wine. That was near
the end though and she said to have only
one glass.
I will admit that I had a few sips of a
wine cooler when I was in my2nd trimester
but other than that I drank nothing
besides milk, water, and juice. I also had
the occasional Pepsi

I know it's okay to have a glass of wine
sometimes, but I have no clue about beer.
I wouldn't risk it anyway!

I had two glasses of wine total the whole
time I was PG in the last trimester with
both of my kids, but I wasn't having them
at the same time or anything. And they
were small glasses. Doctors say the most
fetal harm comes from drinking during the
first half of preganancy. Since they
cannot establish a "safe amount" many care
providers tell women to abstain altogether
just to be safe. The issue is really
between your friend, her partner, and her
care provider.

I think that it might be a lower
percentage of alcohol. I really don't
know.

yeah if it was me I would not chance my
baby's health for anything. I have heard
and agree with the glass of wine at the
end of pregnency. But it is her decision
and her child not mine. I just texted her
and said too bad she cant drink cause we
could hang out and have a couple, in a
joking way. She replied that she was
already having a beer. I was like what.
I was ready to jump on her case. But who
am I to say anything right?

I'm thinking it is because of the
antioxidants and other things you can get
from the grapes... as far as less
alcohol...beer has less... depending where
you live (each state in the US has their
alcohol limits in beer) Here in Texas
most beers have 3.5% to 5% alcohol (this
is for like bud, miller...ect) Imports
will range in %... The average % for
wine is ~14%....

See i never knew this stuff! I turned 21
and then got pregnant and then I only had
the occasional drink. I really only drink
Mike's and then only if I JUST put Luke
down and I know that I will be coherant
whenever he wakes up. I refuse to get
drunk or even tipsy until I have a
babysitter for him and I won't be taking
care of him for a long time. I watched a
CSI where the women smothered her child
because she was drunk and fell asleep on
top of the baby.
Sorry for the long post. I guess I am
bored.

Most of the concepts about not drinking
are from the effects of the old
prohibition laws that used to exist
earlier on in our country. In Europe,
women who are pregnant drink wine every
day. Some women in France put wine in the
baby's bottles. It is perfectly
acceptable and normal to drink over
there.
The same arguments can be made about
caffeine as with alcohol, which isn't that
great for you either and can stunt the
development of the baby and make you
overtired. But since the marketing of
coffee is so high in this country, it
makes sense that it isn't completely
outlawed: you can have 2 cups a day. I am
not into conspiracy theories, but it
really can make you wonder what is really
good for you, what is myth, or what is
actually a marketing tactic.
There might be some truth to avoiding more
alcohol in the first trimester, but there
is nothing wrong with a glass of wine even
every night. It depends on your tolerance
level of course, and if you feel afraid
that alcoholic drinks with complicate
things for you, don't drink.
Beer as opposed to wine would be
healthier than wine because some people
react differently to the sulfites in wine.
It isn't so much the alcohol in wine that
isn't as good for you, so if you can find
a wine with no sulfites, there is no
reason why you shouldn't have a glass.
Beer, especially stout, is high in iron
and very good for you. Just don't overdo
it.
The key is to remember moderation in
everything.

You know what would be really fun for her?
Throw her a "mocktail party " for her
baby shower with vigin versions of her
favorite cocktails and play poker with a
baby theme. That would be a blast!

they have no clue on how much alcohol it
takes to effect the baby, so why risk it.
Personally, I think its very, very selfish
to not abstain.

Yeah i feel the same. I have a hard time
taking tylenol when i'm pregnant lol.
Kinda helped that i don't drink other
wise, but if i did i would not drink
anything while pregnant.

I've always heard that doctors never know
how much/little alcohol can have negative
effects on a growing baby, so I never
risked it. I didn't even drink after I had
her because I was paranoid about my
breastmilk being affected.

Well said. I think it's ridiculous that
doctors even say that it's okay, but they
don't even know. No one knows how much is
okay or too much. Why risk anything
happening to your baby?
