Well Rowan throws tantrums, all babies do.
I take something she thinks is a toy
away, and the world is ending. I'm use to
her throwing her head back and holding her
breath. Where there is a huge silence
between her cries, in which time she just
has her mouth open, her head thrown back,
her hands thrown in the air, and is
holding her breath. Sometimes I count the
pause time, then she lets out a huge
scream, and the crying begins.
Well I just took away a cup she was
playing with, and she does the thing -
head back, arms up, getting ready to
scream. I watch her. The pause seems too
long. I pick her up expecting a scream to
come out any second, it doesn't come. I
pull her pacifier out and I rock and
bounce her and tell her it's okay to try
to calm her down. She starts going pink.
Her head is still thrown back and her
mouth is open and I start getting so
panicky and so scared because she is
starting to turn purple, and then blueish.
I put her on her belly on my arm with her
face towards the floor and finally she
gasps. I flip her back over and rock her,
but she doesn't really cry, just whimpers.
Then falls asleep almost right away.
Except I'm scared to have her just go to
sleep after practically going blue, so I
take her pacifier out of her mouth. Her
eyes shoot open, and she starts to cry.
So I give it back, satisfied that it's
okay to let her sleep, and go lay her
down.
It was so frightening. She's always
throwing huge tantrums, where she throws
herself face down and stiffens her whole
body and screams like a banshee, but she's
never done this. Erik's mom always says
she has Erik's temper. He use to throw
tantrums where he held his breath until he
passed out. I hope this isn't where she's
heading, because it's really scary. The
doctors had told Erik's mom just to let
him have his crazy tantrums somewhere
where he couldn't hurt himself, and to let
him pass out. I really hope this was a
one time thing and she's not taking after
Erik because it would be so scary to "just
let her pass out", I don't think I could
do it because to me it would look like
she's about to kill herself (I know this
isn't possible to kill yourself by holding
your breath, but it's really what it looks
like might happen). If she did start
doing this I'd probably keep responding to
it, so she'd realize it worked for her.
It was just so scary.
In other news I cut off Nathan's dreads
last night, and this is my new username
that I will stick with.

My husband used to do that, I guess. And
the doctor told his mom to let him hold
his breath - no one ever suffocated by
holding their breath. The bodies natural
reaction is to LIVE.
How short is Nathan's hair now? Does he
feel part naked without them?

I hope she's ok now

That's so scary! Sometimes when Kaylee is
throwing a tantrum she holds her breath
& it scares me half to death. Or if
she gets hurt, before she starts screaming
she'll hold her breath. I always gently
shake her to try to get her to snap out of
it. I like your new username, it's nice
& simple!

Nathan's hair is a little above his
shoulders, it's choppy because I cut it
but I'll post a picture later. He's got
really thick and poofy hair naturally.
She is fine and sleeping. I'm use to her
pausing for up to maybe 10 - 15 seconds,
but this was at least a minute. I waited
for her to let out the scream, I picked
her up and rocked her around in the room,
had time to walk down the hall, and then
into the living room rocking her and
laying her on her belly in there, all in
the time she was holding her breath. It's
the fact that she was going all blue that
really scared me. I started thinking
maybe she wasn't holding it but choking on
her spit or something. Either way, it was
scary!
edit* also her shoulders and neck went
all limp, I tried to get her to hold her
torso up but she'd just let her head roll
back. I think it was from exhausting
herself. Man man man, scary little Rowan.

liam does that all the time. i was afraid
he was killing brain cells but the doc
said as long as he breathes again within a
min its ok. he said to not give them to
much attention because it encourages them
to do that to get a reaction out of you.
shes younger than liam was when he
started. he did it in a store one day and
was laying in the middle of the toy
section so it looked like was pitching a
fit over a toy. as bad as it sounds when
he gets like that i kinda hope he passes
out cuz then at least he stops screaming
and wants to be held. if he doesnt once he
breathes he starts screaming like a mad
man

Dani that's what I started thinking, that
she was going to give herself brain
damage!
I like your new avatar by the way, pretty.

a little boy my mom used to watch used to
do that til he passed out.. his
pediatrician actually told his mom to
splash cold water in his face when he does
it to make him breathe. Its something they
outgrow but until then its scary and
infuriating. Thankfully Jacob is the only
one that throws tantrums so far.. and all
his are are him throwing himself to the
ground like a limp noodle and crying.
