a girl on my other forum went for the unassisted home birth and the baby died.

Crying
or Very sad

if anyone is going to do it, at least have a midwife waiting out in the living room or something.

Oh that is just horrible!

Did she tell you all that she was planning on having an unassisted birth before hand? I could never be able to face a group of women and let them know that because of my decisions, my baby died. So she just signed on one day and posted that her baby passed away?

That is just so sad. That poor woman and child Sad

Well, if you think about it women have been doing this for much longer than medical institutions have been around and the population is still going strong. I have also heard from many sources that the unnatural position hospitals put you in during labor goes against the natural process. Gravity is supposed to play a role and it doesn't when you are laying on your backside.

Quote:
In some countries almost all births happen in hospital, whereas in other countries home birth is considered the first choice for healthy and otherwise low-risk women. The change to planned hospital birth for low-risk pregnant women in many countries during this century was not supported by good evidence. Planned hospital birth may even increase unnecessary interventions and complications without any benefit for low-risk women. The review found only one small trial, which provided no strong evidence to favour either planned hospital birth or planned home birth for low-risk pregnant women.

everyone knew she was going to do it. she had done a lot of planning and research, and i guess she felt confident. then she came on and posted the whole story of what happened that day. it was really sad and though i don't know every last detail, i'm almost positive the baby would have made it if she'd had a professional on hand.

Well, that may be true. But maternal death rates and infant death rates are probably a lot lower than they were when women birthed at home with no help but a neighbor Smile

I'd be concerned about a cord accident or breathing problems, personally. Or that maybe I'd start to hemmorhage, or my baby's heartrate would start dropping and I'd never know. I'd personally never want to labor anywhere but in a hospital, for my own peace of mind. My dream labor is in a room full of machines surrounded by competant medical professionals! If I could do my labor all over again, I'd do the exact same thing I did before, just without the epi. Smile

Good luck Sarah!
Having it at home would scare me. I rather be at a hospital. I can't help, but think about a post I think Bridget posted before we had the babies about women who have sex during labor.
I think about that often, I'm a freak.
Maybe you and Baron can do that. lol j/k

I might as well have done my birth of Oni unassisted. For the ladies who don't know, I had absolutely NO medical intervention with my labor.

I had no IV, no epidural, nothing.

I agree with opal(don't remember your name). Woman have done this for YEARS. I don't mind being at the hospital JUST in case, but I'd still be comfy at home.

I'm not going to leave my house until I cannot speak through a contraction. Let's just hope my tolerance for this pain hasn't risen. Because that will mean home birth for us! LOL!

My hubby is TOO nervous for that scenerio!!! LOL!!!

It's always nice to be at the hospital just in case. I hope that's what I can do, and pretty much is what I'm planning on. I think my biggest worry on a home birth is hemorrhaging and/or baby not breathing. I hardly underestimate anything, but I'm pretty sure I'm underestimating how much pain I'll be in. I'm sure most girls will agree with me.

question- anyones pain less than what they expected? or did everyone feel like they were going to die once the contractions started?
