Insomnia and medications not working
Posted: 12-15-07 03:06am

I've had ongoing insomnia for a few years, but in the past month its been worse then ever before. This month I can remember staying awake without fatigue for over 24 hours at least 4 times and when i do go to sleep, its usually not till around 4-7. I went to my doctor who took a blood and urine test and first proscribed me 25mg Hydroxyzine to take at bedtime before he got the results back from the tests, which seemed to work the first time i took it, but the next time it didn't work at first, so i took another dose a safe number of hours later and still no effect(ended up going to sleep around 7-8am), the next day i looked up the max "safe" dose, which i believe was 50mg and took that at bedtime, still no effect. That night i did not sleep so we contacted my doctor(who now had the results of my tests) the next day and he gave me 1 tsp Chloral Hydrate 500mg/5mL Syrup 2 hours before bedtime i thought it seemed to work, but by the time i got to bed i had not slept in over 36 hours anyway so i could have just normally gone to sleep, today....well now that its 3am i guess yesterday.... i took the same dose of Chloral Hydrate at 10 (now 3am) and obviously it didn't work, haven't even felt even a little drowsy yet.

I'm contacting my doctor sometime today to try and get another script, but I'd like more feedback about this then just a doctor giving me some sleep meds.

Anyone have any ideas what this could could be or how it could be helped?

Thanks a bunch.

Thanks to whoever modified my post. Thats what i was going for, you just made it more clear for everyone else :]

12/15/07: Went to the ER for my insomnia, they gave me 50mg shot of Benadryl and two 1mg Lorazepam, one to take right when i got the shot and one to take tomorow. I just got back from the hospital and they seem to be working, the more i type the more out of it i get, but i would still like to have more feedback.

12/16/07: I took the lorazepam a while ago and its not seeming to work. Feedback still wanted please.

No i haven't tried that, always been interested though. My next step is going to U of M or Henry Ford Hospital and having them do a sleep study on me, mabie that'll give them some facts about my sleep/brain habits or patters and they'll give me something they know will work. But if that doesn't work either, i guess hypnotherapy would be after that.

Try looking into mind alterting sleep tracks. The rhythms that you listen to tweak your brain to put you into that deep state of sleep, and it seems to be the best cure for insomnia around.
