Manic Depressive + Pregnancy = Beyond Fatigue
Posted: 12-16-07 05:36am

I was diagnosed with Manic Depression when I was 11 years old, I am now 27, & pregnant with my first child. I never thought I could have kids, but that's besides the point. I have been off my meds for years, & have handled my condition fairly well. Until now.

I can't seem to get out of bed, I seem to sleep all the time. Due to financial reasons I am unable to see a doctor, hopefully will be able to soon. But I don't know what to do right now. I want to get out & start walking, but I can't seem to get out of the house. It's getting pretty bad. My house is a mess, I'm not taking proper care of myself. I feel like I have shut down.

I am severely overweight, I had lost about 18 pound prior to finding out I was pregnant, but now I've gained about twice as much as I had lost & I am not sure if it's just lack of exercise or of it's fluid retention. I cry when I am alone all the time. I am worried that if I am this bad during pregnancy, what is postpartum going to be like. I am going to be a terrible mother. I don't know what to do.

I guess this is just a vent more than anything else.

Stop Worrying

If you are worried about being a good mother now. You will be a good mother, afterwards. You are stressed becuase you care. It you wasn't going to be a good mother you wouldn't be worrying about anything. You wouldn't care. Based on what you have written you care very much. You will keep caring after the baby is born. You may get the blues. Not all people get them. You may be the one without them. In any case you will not let it stop you from being good to the baby. The baby might be all that keeps you together if you get the blues. Take care of yourself, and that baby.

I know nothing about pregnancies, but I do know that feeling based on my experience with depression. Sometimes it takes a huge amount of willpower, but you've got to find a way to get out of bed and take care of what little things you can. Is there anyone you can get to help you with the housework and general things to make sure you're taking care of yourself?
