Vitamins during pregnancy - vitamin C and folic acid Posted: 12-16-07 08:57am
I am 32 weeks pregnant and my doctor
prescribed extra iron supplement because
of my anemia levels (I was diagnosed with
Thalassemia a few years ago)
I am taking a multavitamin for pregnant
women (with 18 mg of folic acid and 90mg
of vitamin C), Omega 3 (1000mg) and
another pregnant supplement (with 400 mcg
of folic acid, 90mg of Vitamin C and 27 mg
of iron).
Is this too much? Can this be dangerous
for the baby at all?
To bear in mind that my hematocritos had
been really low during my pregnancy
(32-35%) and my Hb is 11.2.
Thanks a lot!

You cannot overdose on folic acid and
Vitamin C because any excess amount of
these or any other hydrosoluble
(water-solving) vitamin will be excreted
out of the body. You can, however,
overdose on liposoluble (fat-solving)
vitamins (A, D, E and K) if you take too
many of these vitamins because they are
accumulated in the body. Give your
prescription, it seems likely that your
body and the fetus will be safe. To be
sure, you can always check with your
OB-GYN.
