Back Just Went Out...again (sigh) Posted: 12-18-07 01:39am
I've had reoccuring back issues since I
initially injured it foolishly lifting a
VERY heavy weight with my back over 15yrs
ago.
I recall beginning to have very serious
issues starting 10-12yrs ago. However,
the most detrimental injury occured while
I worked as a gymnastics coach during
college. I recall this particular injury
lasted 2-3 weeks, during which I could not
walk properly. For the first week, I was
unable to walk completely.
After graduating college, I voluntarily
got into coaching and am now currently in
my 5th year as a volunteer high school
wrestling coach. It's a great sport and
the kids are fun to be around.
However, I'm only 30yrs old and my lower
back issues are finally catching up with
me, which is greatly affecting my ability
to coach effectively, not to mention,
conduct other personal business without
having to first question the stability of
my lower back at the time.
It's become very frustrating. I'm an
athletic person, but this nagging lower
back problem is greatly prohibiting my
daily activities. For instance, I was
unable to exercise this evening because of
it.
I've never gone to see a doctor, to tell
you the truth, I'm afraid what a doctor
might tell me.
When I lie flat on my back, it is
difficult for me to raise my feet and legs
off the ground. Needless to say, I
experience pain when doing this as well.
When I walk, I'm slightly hunched over. I
am unable to walk with a straight back.
I feel pain and tightness in my lower back
region, but also in my hips and pelvis and
a strange, sharp pain down my legs.
I've never allowed this problem to deter
me from my usual tasks, like, getting
firewood, taking out the trash, etc. In
fact, I'll be attending practice tomorrow
afternoon and pray that my back allows me
to perform a minimal amount of physical
activity.
The pain I can live with, but I can't live
without having the flexibility. Can you
please suggest some life long exercises or
treatments focusing on preventing further
back injuries and possibly some
strengthening exercises as well?
Thank you.

Hello Slider,
Sorry to hear of your back injury and
pain.
You know what you should have done YEARS
AGO, and that is to seek the advice of a
neurologist/spinal surgeon. The longer
you wait the worse it is going to get.
AND if the doctor recommends physical
therapy it is only the doctor and a
physical therapist who should tell you
which exercises to do.
Your not wanting to see a doctor has
already cost you a great deal. This may
not be nice to say, but frankly I don't
have much sympathy for you and the pain
you have. If you are not willing to see a
medical doctor who specializes in back
pain, then live with it!!!
Now get off your butt and make an
appointment to see the best
neurologist/spinal surgeon you can find.
And after you make the appointment, make
an appointment to get a second opinion
from another doctor.
MOVE!!!

Thanks, but I don't have any medical
insurance at the moment. However, I
recently applied to Basic Health, which
begins January 1st. I'll have to wait
until then.

Hello Slider,
GREAT that you have applied for health
insurance. An important first step.
I hesitate to bring up the subject -
however - do you know if the insurance you
applied for will cover "existing
conditions"? Its an important thing to
know.
Do stay in contact and let me know how
things go for you.
