Blood Too - clots - questions? Posted: 12-19-07 09:56am
A roomate of mine has a blood disorder and
gets blood clots in her legs. She was in
the hospital for about a week but is now
out. I have a few questions about
this....
First.....she was supposed to have surgery
to put an umbrella or something in a vein
or artery I think (correct me if I am
wrong). They were going to make a small
incision in her neck and put it somewhere
by her heart I think. She told us they
then decided against the surgery because
then she could not have kids. Is that
true? How is something that is put by
your heart for your blood disorder keep
your from having kids?
Second......she was told by the doctor she
cannot go back to work until something in
her blood goes higher (some number that
measures something, sorry I don't know
exactly what it is). But wouldn't she be
on bedrest then? She goes out to the bar
and runs around all over the place but she
can't work? How is this? Is she lying or
just disobeying the doctor? I know we do
not know what the doctor said but any
insight would be greatly appreciated!!!

I imagine the doctors where correct, often
blood pressure goes up with pregnancy, so
that may effect the umbrella, and cause it
to collapse.
Some one should remind her that her health
is golden gift, you can;t go back and say
i want to do it all over again.
If u notice her lips are blue, get her
silly butt to the ER.
She needs a wake up call.. i would give
anything to be healthy and go to the bar,
she is making things worse..hell i never
heard of alcohol helping anything.

I don't know about an umbrella to prevent
clots but doctors can put in a greenfield
filter. It will prevent clots from
traveling to the heart, lungs or brain
which can have lethal results. Your
roommate is likely on coumadin/warfarin.
This is an anticoagulant that prevents the
blood from clotting too much. You need to
have blood draws to check the pt/INR (the
clotting time). The doctor may not want
her to work if her work is high risk for
getting cut, bruising etc. Bed rest is
absolutely the wrong thing if you are
prone to clots. The lack of circulation in
your legs on bed rest can cause clots to
form.

I totally agree with that, i have been
hospitalized many times and when i can;t
move they put me on heprin, they want u to
move, but no serious massages with those
heavy duty massgers that almost killed my
sister in law as she has a clot disorder,
we found out it was heredatary, some
people have a history of it and if you
ignore not be able to breathe, it could be
very serious, or obesity add to it good
