New to Forum - Bipolar - wake up disoriented Posted: 12-20-07 17:48pm
I was diagnosed Bipolar I 7 years ago
after many years of someone trying to get
the right diagnosis and treatment! I
still have had to switch medications many
times due to side effects, etc. I am now
taking Lamictal, Trileptal, and Xanax. I
am pretty well stabilized but I do have a
question for other Bipolars. Do you ever
awake (even after a nights sleep or just a
nap) and be very disoriented for just a
short period of time? It's almost like
you have a confused, nauseated feeling
untill you "shake it off".
Anyone with help or suggestions? Thanks.

I'm not bipolar, but my husband has that
diagnosis. He is taking Lamictal,
Stelazine, Zoloft & Ativan (as
needed). He doesn't usually wake up
disoriented, but it has happened on
occasion. Sometimes, he'll wake up, say
something weird (e.g. "Whoops!" or "Huh?")
& fall back to sleep. Sometimes dreams
affect him & make him emotional, but I
don't know that he wakes up feeling
nauseated or confused that often.

If you're taking that before you go to
bed, then that could very well be what's
making you "disoriented." When I used to
take it, I would wake up feeling weird,
and just plain old sucky. Then of course,
like you said, once you shake it off, it's
better. But, who wants to wake up like
that everyday?!
