Endometriosis NuvaRing and bleeding
Posted: 12-23-07 03:54am

none really I am just trying to find out why I am still having my cycle for 15 days when I usually only last 5. The blood is like that of the end of my cycle but is still there and when I have sex it is uncomfortable so I am not sure if it's because of this Nuvaring that I just started 15 days ago to regulate my cycle and reduce my cramping or if there is something else going on. I have been tested for all other Stds so I know that's not what it could be.....I am just worried. I don't know if this pain is from the endo, or if it's cause I have' been sexually active for sometime but what it could be but I need to know if I could get off this because I dont want to be in pain and bleed all the time just to regulate my cycle. Thanks so much for your time..

You sound like you're spotting. If you just started Nuvaring then this is completely normal. I can't believe your gynecologist didn't tell you that spotting is a normal side effect.

It doesn’t seem likely that sexual activity could be the cause of the prolonged menstrual period (menorrhagya). Wearing the Nuvaring is also probably not responsible for the bleeding that you are experiencing. In fact, the Nuvaring should stop any bleeding. This is because the Nuvaring or any other hormonal contraception brings the endocrine system back into balance if the reason for the original bleeding was functional (hormonal imbalance). If the original cause for menorrhagya was diagnosed as organic in nature ( tumors or infection ) hormonal therapy usually doesn’t help.

It seems more likely that endometriosis could be the reason for the prolonged menstruation. Hormonal contraception is given for treating endometriosis but is not always successful.
You SHOULD consult your gynecologist about your condition and report your symptoms. Together, you can work out a treatment plan that is best for you.
