It doesn’t seem likely that sexual
activity could be the cause of the
prolonged menstrual period (menorrhagya).
Wearing the Nuvaring is also probably not
responsible for the bleeding that you are
experiencing. In fact, the Nuvaring should
stop any bleeding. This is because the
Nuvaring or any other hormonal
contraception brings the endocrine system
back into balance if the reason for the
original bleeding was functional (hormonal
imbalance). If the original cause for
menorrhagya was diagnosed as organic in
nature ( tumors or infection ) hormonal
therapy usually doesn’t help.
It seems more likely that endometriosis
could be the reason for the prolonged
menstruation. Hormonal contraception is
given for treating endometriosis but is
not always successful.
You SHOULD consult your gynecologist about
your condition and report your symptoms.
Together, you can work out a treatment
plan that is best for you.
