You can pass oral herpes (not considered
and std since you do not have to have sex
to get it) to the genital area.

I was wondering the same thing... because
i've never even kissed anyone before and I
got a cold sore on my lip the other day...
it wasn't big or gaping or anything like
that. It really just looked like a pimple
on my lip. I also got a pimple like bump
like this on the middle of my thigh. Could
this be genital herpes even though I'm
still a virgin in every sense of the
word?? Ahh... I'm freakin out haha.

If you've never been in contact with
someone with herpes then probably you
don't have herpes.

A cold sore is in the herpes family of
viruses but it varicella zoster. It is the
same virus that causes chicken pox and
shingles. If you had chicken pox you may
develop a cold sore. The virus will lay
dormant in the body until there is a
stressor and then it will be activated and
a cold sore can result. The virus can be
transferred to other parts of the body, ie
the genital area, if precautions are not
taken to prevent it. Don't touch the cold
sore and then use the bathroom and touch
the genital area. You could spread the
virus. Hand washing is your best defense
in keeping the virus contained.

Some people just get canker sores too, and
often mistake them for cold sores. Canker
sores have nothing to do with herpes and
aren't communicable, and are often caused
by environmental factors, food, stress,
etc (not a virus). They occur in and
around the mouth, are usually painful, but
don't occur on the surface of the lips.
