trouble sleeping working night shift
Posted: 12-28-07 04:23am

I have been working nightshifts for about 3 years now. 5 days a week from 10:30 PM until 6:30 AM. I usually go to bed around 7 or 8 AM and sleep till 3 PM. I have no problem sleeping during the day since I am quite used to it. The weekends however are dramatic. I try to go to bed and get up at a normal times to spend time with my boyfriend. I am usually pretty jetlagged during the day and in the evening when we try to watch a movie I am fighting not to fall asleep. Then when we go to bed I can't sleep. I toss and turn, watch TV etc. and I get really warm at night. Sometimes I just stay up and go to bed in the morning for a few hours and take a nap late afternoon. The doctor gave me Ambien and that sometimes seems to help but not always.

My question is...

Is this bad for my health? I do seem to have higher bloodpressure lately and gained some weight.
I have been taking Melatonin before going to bed as well since I heard that the body only makes this at night? and shortage of it might cause certain cancers.
I also have severe migraines at times.

Are there any other people here with full time nightshift jobs? maybe you have some advice for me Smile

Thanks!

I used to work full time midnights, too. I worked 11-7 Fr, Sa, Su, Mo, Tu, & Wed. On Wednesday's, I'd sleep as late as possible into the night, like until 9 or 9:30 PM..then when I'd get off work on Thursday, I'd stay up all day long and just go to bed around 7 or 8 PM. That way I'd be "normal for Friday...Also, I'd drink warm tea..chamomille before going to bed on work mornings..that helped.
