I am new to this forum and this is my
first post here, so hopefully I can get
some advice from everyone
I am a 16 year old male, 125 lbs, 5'10'',
who is generally inactive and spends a
majority of the time on a computer or
studying because of excessive work from
school. Over the past two years, I've been
experiencing strange occurrences that have
been worrying me. Twice, I had a sudden
increase of my heart when I took a very
deep breath and it wasn't an increase that
you would get from fear, exercising, or
stress, it was a very sudden and rapid
beat; after 30 seconds, it stopped beating
fast abruptly (it did not slowly go back
to a regular beat, it abruptly went back
to beating normally which was strange).
The first main occurrence that caught my
attention was at my job when all of a
sudden I felt a "fluttering" sensation and
slightly became dizzy. When this was
happening, I sort of "zoned out" on
everything that was happening and could
not concentrate on what my employees were
telling because I was concentrating on my
heart. I was about to call an ambulance
but did not necesarrily pass out or
anything (I thought maybe this was a first
time panic-attack?). The symptoms quickly
subsided and I did not hesitate to make an
appointment with my cardiologist. My
cardiologist did an EKG and everything
turned out normal. He also put me on a
heart monitor for 1 month. During the time
of wearing it, I had no symptoms. So I
decided to start exercising because this
lifestyle of mine did not appear to
benefit me very much. I began jogging,
walking, and trying to stay away from the
computer. However, after jogging for about
10 + minutes, I start to have excruciating
pain in my back. I feel as though I can
keep running, I am not out of breath, and
do not experience pain anywhere else, but
I return home because of the fear that
it's a heart problem. Lately, I've been
taking walks with my father outside and
today after walking for about 20 +
minutes, I started to have extreme pain in
the center of my chest, kind of where the
esophagus is and in my back (specifically
the left area). I am going to make an
appointment with my cardiologist soon to
discuss these things that have been
happening.
However, these are my concerns. Could it
be possible that muscle pain may be
causing these symptoms? When they occur, I
am not out of breath, no pain is present
in my jaw or arms, nor do I feel nausa or
dizzines, just fear. Unfortunately, since
I have spent a large part of my life on a
computer, I have developed bad posture and
things related to that nature. Lately,
I've been trying to improve my posture but
sometimes with difficulty because it makes
my muscles ache in my back since they are
not used to it. Could it be possible that
the bad posture is causing heart problems
or muscle pain?
[Edit] - I forgot to mention that I also
had stomach problems around the age of
13-14. I was diagnosed with Acid Reflux
and I had inflammation in my intestines. I
took nexium for a year and it alleviated
my stomach problems.
Thank you in
advance,
Jordan

Hi Jordan,
I think the pain you are describing in
your throat/esophagus area after
walking/jogging is probably your acid
reflux acting up. That is one of the
symptoms.
I'm not quite sure about the fluttering.
I used to get them a lot around the age of
15, then the panic attacks started to
occur. Two years later, I was diagnosed
with syncopy (fainting for no reason). It
just sort of went away on its own, no
medication required.
When you go to the doctor next time, ask
about anxiety disorders.
Sitting on the computer won't cause this.
Although, my husband's coworker (they are
programmers) said he got 2 blood clots in
his legs from being inactive and sitting
on the computer without exercising
inbetween.

Please don't type in all caps.
I didn't diagnose him. I am not a doctor.
Saying I think he is experiencing some
acid reflux symptoms is not a diagnosis.
I told him to go to the doctor
and ask
him about anxiety disorders.
How is that a diagnosis?

Hi!
Are you sure you are experiencing heart problems because
of the pollution? What are your symptoms,
and have you been to the doctor?
I would think breathing difficulties would
be caused by pollution sooner than heart
problems....

Talk to Your Doctor About Ventricular Tachycardia Posted: 01-06-08 21:51pm
Jordan1234,
I've had heart disease (hypertrophic
cardiomyopathy) since I was 12. I'm 34
now, so I've learned to deal with it. I
had surgery 5 years ago and got off all my
meds and got active for the first time
since I was 11. But enough background.
A few weeks ago, I felt the same thing you
did. I was sitting on the couch, just
watching TV, and my heart started to
flutter. It felt as though birds were
beating around in my chest. I got really
light headed, thinking I was going to pass
out, and I found it heard to breathe. I
thought it was anxiety at first, until it
happened again a minute or so later. I
decided to go to the hospital (I got a
drive - don't drive yourself if it happens
to you again). They hooked me up to the
monitors and my heart rate was 273 bpm.
They said I had something called
Ventricular tachycardia (v-tach). You can
google or wikipedia it, but the basic idea
is that it's a fast heart rhythm that
originates in one of the ventricles. The
heart just beats really fast, so fast that
it isn't pumping any blood, and you get
light headed and your legs and arms might
feel weak. It's something they pretty
much have to catch as it's going on. They
put me on a boatload of medication (mainly
Amiodarone) and, after four days, I
stopped feeling them. They then implanted
an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator
(ICD) in me; like the defibrilator
paddles, but inside me all the time so
that if the v-tach happens again, it'll
shock me back to normal.
Now, I'm not saying this is what you have,
and I hope to God it isn't, but you may
want to discuss the possibility with your
doc. Good luck to you.
