swollen ligaments with sprained ankle Posted: 12-28-07 17:52pm
I sprained my right ankle two years ago
and it never healed properly. I was
practicing soccer and kicked the ball over
the fence. I climbed the 5 foot fence
(which is over my height) and jumped over
and twisting my body around to avoid the
garden on that side and landed in a hole.
I heard a "pop" at the time of injury. I
got an MRI done recently and it showed
swollen ligaments. Now the pain is much
worse and it goes from my ankle, up my
leg, to my knee. I also notice when I
press down on the left side of my right
ankle I have alot of pain. Also, when I
press down on the bones on my leg, I am
also in alot of pain. Should I get more
tests done? Could there maybe sonething
wrong in the leg also?

Did you get an Xray to test for broken
bones?

Yes, I got an x ray but I have not got the
results back yet. I think I might have a
fracture because I have pain everywhere
and is has been so long since I injured it
and the pain is just getting worse because
it is on my ankle and it goes up my leg to
my knee. I also noticed that when I grip
my hand around the left and right side
just above my right ankle and press down
on it, it hurts alot. Also, when I press
down on the bone on my leg it hurts alot
too, and my knee hurts alot also. There
is also a bump on the top of my foot.
That hurts also. I have an Orthopaedic
appointment but that's not till a month
from now. I need to see another
immediately with all of this pain I have.
It is hard to sleep and it even hurts when
I elevate it. I am on prescription pain
pills but they are not working and I also
take Advil and Tylenol but they are not
working either.

You poor thing!
Cassie, while you wait to see the doctor,
are you on crutches? Can you find a pair?

Yes, I use crutches from time to time.
Sometimes I just limp around. It is hard
to sleep and get comfortable. I did hear
from someone that she got x rays and an
MRI done and they found nothing. Then
when she got Ankle Arthroscopy done she
found out she had a fractured Talus. I am
worried that I might have that also. If
my x rays come out normal, I want to get
Ankle Arthroscopic done because it might
show something that the x rays did not. I
am in so much pain and I know I do have
something and sometimes x rays don't
usually pick up fractures all the time and
that is where Ankle Arthroscopy comes
in.\

It sounds like you will need to be firm
with your doctor that you want to figure
this out. You will have to be your own
advocate. Be careful about taking too
much Tylenol or Advil. They are really
for periodic use only. Can you get your
appointment moved up?

I tried to get an Orthopaedic appointment
earlier but they said that mine was the
earliest appointment. Do you think I
should go to the hospital?

Hmmm. That could be costly. Do you have
insurance to cover it?

I know that my insurance will cover about
eighty percent of the hospital. That is
why I am wondering if I should go or not
because of all the pain I am in or should
I just wait for my Orthopaedic appointment
in later January?

I'd say go ... they might think
differently than on orthopedic doctor
could ... are you prepared to ask
questions and request specific
diagnostics? It's not normal to be
experiencing so much pain all of the time.

I am prepared to ask questions and request
tests that will show more than just x
rays. I know that it is unusual to have
all this pain but I do know that it is
related to the chronic sprained ankle
years ago. I also might have done
something to my leg and knee at that time
and that could have never healed. So I am
worried about that. I know that I feel
something poking at my knee joint and when
I kneel it is painful. I think maybe a
piece of bone broke off and know it is
poking at my knee joint. I have no idea
what that could be. Also, I think I could
have a fracture in my ankle because it is
very painful and it does pop alot and I
can feel something moving in it and is
very painful. On my leg, the bone that
goes from the ankle to the knee, when I
press on it, it is also very painful. So,
I will tell the doctor all of this and I
might have to get Ankle Arthroscopy done
to get in depth analysis on all my pain.

Right. The ankle / foot fracture could
be a "stress fracture" that is more
difficult to see on an x-ray, so just know
that these types of fractures are
difficult to diagnose. Good luck and let
us know!
