Is She Eating Too Much?
Posted: 12-29-07 21:05pm

I took my 1 week old into the pediatricians yesterday, and the doc said she should only be taking an ounce of milk or formula at a feeding. When I breastfeed, Jayden takes about 4 ounces, and when I give her formula she takes 2 to 3 ounces. The pediatrician said to cut back what she's eating, but I think that's crazy... I don't want to deal with a screaming, hungry baby. Should I just feed her until she's not hungry, or should I limit her to an ounce?

My doctor told me when i switched her from breast to formula at 2 weeks to do 2 ounces at 2 weeks, 3 ounces at 3 weeks, 4 ounces at 4 weeks and never go more than that. Ava needed more formula than that to be happy, so I gave it to her.
I'd feed her until she's full. She'll tell you when she's done. As long as she's not spitting up, I'd just give her what you feel is right. If she spits up, I'd cut back. That means you're overfeeding her.
I had the same problem with my dr.

1 ounce? finn was taking more than an ounce (of formula) before we'd even left the hospital!

personally i'd feed her until she's full. you're the mom! the doctor is your guide, but in the end you're the boss.

That's what I was thinking. I've been feeding her until she was full, but I've been feeling guilty and thought I'd get some other mothers input Very
Happy thanks ladies.

How do you know how much she is getting when you breastfeed? Do you pump and give?

One ounce seems like such a small amount. Was that really a doc who told you?

Yeah, I pumped a few times for the same amount of time that Jay feeds, and I got a little over 4 oz and she took most of it each time. And yeah, she really said 1 oz! And absolutely no more than an ounce and a half.

My son will be 2 weeks old this weds and he typically eats at least 2 1/2 ozs per feeding and up to 3-4 ozs a few times a day at a time! He eats 3-4 ozs when it has been about 3 hours between feeding. My Dr. told me that he eats way to much for his age but since hes healthy and not what she considers overwight then I shouldnt worry about it. If hes hungry then I'm going to feed him! Goodluck, personally I think your baby is doing fine. My baby is a porker lol! Smile

My son was on 3oz feeding every 4 hours at 2wks old, now 6wks is on 5oz every 4.5hrs.

I would feed her as much as she will take, i think 1oz is not enough to satisfy any baby!

Good Luck x
