Panic Attacks
Posted: 04-21-04 12:42pm

Hello everyone!
I get these "attacks" and I never knew what they were up until a couple of months ago. First, my heart would start beating really fast, I would get tired, and my palms would start sweating. Then, I would burst out crying for no reason, and become very weak. I would have to have someone carry me to the bathroom because I couldn't walk by myself. And sometimes, I end up throwing up.

I was getting nervous because I know if you have diabetes, these are some of the symptoms, and my grandma has diabetes. So, I went to the doctor and I got tested for diabetes and I got my thyroid tested. Everything was negative, which is good...But my doc said I was having panic attacks.

I usually get them about once a month now. When they come, I just let them come. I used to be scared because before because I didn't know what was going on with me. But now, I just tell myself to let it go, get it over with, it will go away. They haven't been as bad as they used to be now.

Now to my question...These past couple of days, I have felt strange. I have been working 60 hours a week for the past month, so I thought I was just plain tired. But this afternoon, I was at work talking to my boss and I asked him (jokingly) if he would be able to carry me to the bathroom if I had a panic attack. All of the sudden, I just started bawling, and I ran to the bathroom and started dry heaving. For the rest of the day, I was dead tired. I know when you cry, you're exhausted afterwords. But it's been like this since monday. I am so tired! And I just don't feel right. I was wondering if this could be part of the panic attack. Can it go on for two days? I am probably overreacting. I am a huge worry wart. I am sure it's just because I have been working so much. It's probably just mental and physical tiredness.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone else has experienced panic attacks that has lasted for a day or more. Thanks!

never had a panic attack that lasted for days, but certainly have experienced debillitating anxiety that lasted days on end. You said you are a "worrywart" and "probably overreacting." which suggests to me that your thoughts are the problem and you need to learn how to counter them and correct them with cbt. My favorite starter book on cbt is "been there, done that? Do this! By sam obitz if you're interested and many universities offer cbt programs for little or no charge. It's the best stress reducer around and once you learn the tools they are with you wherever you go.
Good luck!

I would also look at "your" life & consider what may be lacking (study, friends, fun, hobby etc) & try putting that into your life - if you're happier you are less likely to stress & unless the panic attacks are related to a specific thing/event then they may well decrease , certainly I don't recall coming across anyone whose attacks lasted so long.

Also you say now they're usually once a month (hormonal maybe - if so it might be worth having a hormone level test).
