Swollen Tonsils, Oral Thrush And Soooo Tired Posted: 04-22-04 00:42am
For the past 4-5 months I have had swollen
tonsils and a white coated tongue with red
spots. I am now feeling exhausted a lot
of the time, there is a dry, burning or
tingling sensation at the back of my
throat, and I have difficulty swallowing.
The dr told me that I have tonsililitus
and oral thrush, but doesnt know what
caused it. He tested me for diabetes and
glandular fever. I have neither. I
have taken a course of anti-biotics, but
still was no change. Does anyone know
what this condition is, and what I can do
about it?

It sounds like you need to be on
anti-fungal medicine along with the
antibiotics. Thrush is an infection but
is similar to a yeast infection where it's
cause by an overabundance of fungal
bacteria and should be treated with
antifungal medicine. The antibiotics
would work for typical tonsillitis.

Thanks for you're response. I took a
course of nystatin at the first sign of
the symptoms. They were delicious
pastilles! But the oral thrush has still
not gone away.
I'm hoping I can figure out the root of
the symptoms so I can change whatever is
causing it. I don't smoke or have
asthma, and this is the first time I have
ever had tonsilitis and oral thrush.
The only irregular thing that I can link
to my mouth is that my wisdom teeth
started coming out around the same time as
the symptoms started. Could this
influence thrush?

Ollen Tonsls, Oral Thrush, And Soooo Tired Posted: 04-30-04 22:31pm
Hi lexis, I too have the same symptoms as
you. I have had a constant sore throat
for the past 9 months. I am in misery. I
have been to the doctor numerous times and
had every kind of test run in the book.
Nothing ever shows up and the doctor says
that she hs no idea what is wrong. I am
so frustrated! I too have the burning at
the back of my throat and it hurts really
bad. Mostly when I try to do some
activity and in the evening. I have
noticed white stuff on my tonsils too and
some kind of white coating on my tongue.
My doctor didnt say anyting about this.I
have been on multiple antibiotics and
nothing works. Please let me know if you
get to the root of your problem so maybe I
could let my doctor know what to check
for!

Stress combined with incoming wisdom teeth
can couse these problems. You should
probably see your dentist to find out if
the wisdom teet are impacted (coming in
obstructed). Are your gingiva (gums)
bleeding too? It may be a syncrome that
dnetists know as anug.
achronic necrotizing ulcerative
ginigivitis . The thrush sounds like it
is a opportunistic complication, secondary
to impacted wisdom teeth.

Thanks for your responses.
The back of my gums have been bleeding on
one side where the wisdom teeth are coming
through. Where the gum hangs over the
tooth, its very hard to keep clean aswell,
because food particles get stuck
underneath. The alignment of the wisdom
teeth coming through are straight, but one
tooth is twisted so the front is not
facing forwards.
So it makes sense that my teeth may have
impacted further infection, if that's so
then I will gladly have these taken out,
if it stops the symptoms. -surely better
than having the tonsils out anyway!!
Pmarie, I don't know how much this helps
you, but I will speak to my dentist and
post the results here.
Ps. I agree that stress definately
affects the symptoms, handing my
dissertation in has been the best remedy
yet of relieving the symptoms!!

I can't get rid of my oral thrush. It
comes back whenever my immune system is
down.
You can take a topical swish and swallow
of nystatin. Right now I have a bad
fungal infection which includes my
sinuses, etal and i'm on diflucan tablets.
Not all Dr.S seem to know about it. But
I have a great ent who is very experienced
with it. And one look into my mouth and
nose and he knows i'm infected.

Ok, I have been to the dentist and I am
still none the wiser about my throat
symptoms. They are still the same. My
dentist has told me that she doesn't
recommend I have my wisdom teeth out, as
it it generally not recommended in her
practice. She has smoothed my teeth out
a bit though so I don't bite on my gums
and make them bleed.
For the oral thrush and throat I have been
recommended dentylph mouthrinse, and it
works very well. I can actually see the
bacteria come out my mouth. I am also
trying natural remedies like aniseed,
garlic, liquorice, honey, lemon,
aloe-vera. Hope this helps anybody with
the same symptoms as me.
Will still appreciate any feedback about
fighting oral thrush, swollen tonsils and
sore throat.

Thrush Treatment! Posted: 10-01-04 19:13pm
I don't know if anyone is still interested
in this subject, however, I had thrush in
my breasts from breastfeeding. Thrush is
a form of candida (yeast) and I was told
that many babies have it in their bodies
at birth. I had given the baby nystatin
but was told that the best thing that
would work for me was diflucan. If you
haven't tried it, it may be worth a shot!
Also, has rinsing with a wash like
listerine helped at all?

Answer For Thrush Posted: 12-06-04 10:10am
I was on nystatin also for my thrush
infection, however, my infection was down
my throat and not visible in my mouth.
Nystatin did not cure it and my ent put me
on diflucan pills. Once a day for ten
days and it did the trick. Even more
important, once the thrush was gone, he
uncovered a bacterial infection on my
lingual tonsils that was not visible
before due to the fungal yeast infection.
They are two completely different
infections and required different
medicines. I went on augmentin for that.
You should definitley be on diflucan for
a difficult to treat yeast infection.

Mono? Posted: 06-02-05 13:56pm
I know this thread is pretty old, but I
just thought I would share. These are
the same exact symptoms I had when I found
out I had mono. Extremely sore throat,
swollen tonsils, tired, and oral thrush
(another big give away were my swollen
lymph nodes.) the doctor said I had
thrush because my throat hurt so bad I
could barely swallow. I don't remember
what medication he gave me for thrush,
but I do remember that it was really hard
to get rid of. My doctor accused me of
not even using it when I came back in for
a checkup and it wasn't gone!

Just wanted to say how helpful i've found
this thread. I've suffered with swollen
tonsils, white coating on the nodes in the
tonsils and tiredness plus white coated
tongue on and off for about 8 years.
This coincides normally with some swelling
in the glands. Coincidentally i've also
got impacted wisdom teeth that have never
broken through properly.
The doctors threw every type of
anti-biotic at me which didnt' clear it
up. At one time they suspected glandular
fever. I found the only thing that
cleared it up was gargling with mildly
diluted tcp two or three times a day -
none of the other mouth washes were strong
enough. I did eventually ask for an
anti-fungal because I suspected it was a
fungal infection, since the infection
often coincided with my girlfriend having
thrush and the anti-fungal did seem to
help.
It's just come back again now and i've had
it for a month and a half so i'll
definitely try an anti-fungal again.
I had wondered about getting my tonsils
removed, but since I also have had
problems with impacted wisdom teeth, I
wonder if getting the wisdom teeth removed
might be the first thing to try. If
anyone with this problem has had this done
an it's cleared it up, i'd be interested
to know.
Thanks

Oral Thrush Will Not Go Away Posted: 10-14-05 09:38am
I am glad to hear that I am not the only
person in the world suffering from this
problem. I forst discovered my problem
about 1 1/2 months ago. I had the
sensation that something was stuck in my
throat. It was driving me nuts. I
finally went and looked in the mirror and
what I saw freaked me out. My tongue was
white and I had bumps on the back of my
tongue. I immediately went to my family
doctor and was advised that I had oral
thrush. I was prescribed nystatin and
magic mouthwash. I was to swish, gargle
and swallow the nystatin for 10 days and
swish, gargle, and spit out the magic
mouthwash 3 times a day. Well, as nasty
as the nystatin was I did it exactly as
prescribed and 10 days later there was
absolutely no diiference. I went back to
the doctor and she seemed shocked that it
had not even began to clear up. The
doctor then said that we were going to try
diflucan. So I did. I took the mediceine
for 5 days and still nothing!! Still have
a white tongue and still have the bumps on
the back of my tongue. I went back to the
doctor again and now she has prescribe
mycelex and has also ordered some blood
work and a culture. She asked if I would
consent to a hiv test and I said yes.
However, I am now completely freaked out.
Everything that I have been reading on
thrush seems to keep refering back to hiv.
I am 36 years old and other than this
thrush I seem to be in pretty good health.
It has now been 4 days since I took the
test and I just cannot seem to calm myself
down. I just keep thinking that if there
is nothing else wrong with me why is
nothing working on my thrush.....Or is it
even possible that this is not even thrush
at all.

Don't Freak Out Posted: 03-31-06 19:34pm
I have the same problem and had very
similar experiences however here's what I
know:
everyone has yeast but when your immune
system is weakened you may not be able to
keep it on check and it can overgrow. I
guess we all know that.
Here's what I suspect for some and
myself:
many things can weaken the immune system.
For example if you have infected teeth,
dental caries or even re-infected root
canals those are fires which you immune
system is trying to control 24/7. This
could leave the door open for yeast to
grow like mad. Remember teeth have miles
of tiny tubules. In a root canaled tooth
blood no longer flows through these but
anaerobic bacteria can live and thrive in
the safety of these tubules and the
bacteria give off some nasy toxins.
I have done no research on tonsils but my
opinion is:
clean up your mouth before jumping to
conclusions. A qualified dentist that's
up on the latest techniques could be the
way to go. There's also great debate on
mercury amalgam fillings and their
possible impact on the body over time.
You'd have to decide for yourself if
removing them is sensible to even
affordable.
I don't think taking supplements will
overcome the burden of a toxic mouth. I'm
in the middle of trying to clean up mine.
It's very expensive but i'm going for it
because being tired all the time is not
working for me and I relate my coated
tongue to skin problems too. If a doctor
suggested diflucan I personally would try
it but no one's suggested that yet.
One of the worst aspects of candida is
that it's hard to tell your friends the
real reason that you're too tired to go
out or even do the things you love. The
mid-afternoon/night-time energy drain
makes work and business very hard.
Let's all fix this and get back to 100%,
okay?
let me know what worked for you.

Re: Oral Thrush Will Not Go Away Posted: 11-23-06 02:58am
Hey there, sammmmme deal with me. White
coating on tongue, kinda yellow, sensative
as hell. Lethargic, bloated when I drank
beer and ate anything fun.
Confused, swollen lymph nodes under arms,
and neck.
Did the nystatin mouse wash, nothing.Did
the anti-fungal tablets, nothing
and yes, I went to 3 diff doctors and the
first thing they said was "have you had an
hiv test"
its just freakin awful.
Here is what I did, I did take an hiv
test, it came back negative.
Then when I feel better about that they
say "welll, your not out of the woods till
6 months from last sexual contact"
huh?, then why take the test?
I am sorry if this offends you but I am in
the adult entertainment business , not in
them, but I make dvd's and know people
that are acting in it, and their tests
need to be every 3 months.
Anyway, so yeah , you look on the web for
your symptoms and it says hiv
what I ended up doing was going to a herb
specialist.
Here is a good one too...I had/have
prostatitus a problem some men get, so I
got prescribed about 2 months of
antibiotics, and since I have back
problems I got a script for prednasone
guess what?, if you look up candida
infection (yeast infection, not the girl
yeast infection)
2 of the ways you get candida is long term
antibiotics and prednasone
but walk into a ent guy, a general doctor,
anyone and they will say "hiv?"
so I went to this herb lady, chinese
medicine, accupuncture
her opinion is that I have a candida
infection, you can look that up, but it
seems that is what I or we have.
I have been in treatment with her for
about 4 months, the improvement is hard to
figure because I havent eaten the
forbidden foods they say you cant eat and
dont know how and if they would effect me,
i also just had 3 wisdom teeth removed,
one very infected and impacted, and that
was contributing to bacteria and also they
say that the lymph system could be screwed
because of fighting that bacteria, but its
been about a month since the removal and
the oral surgeon says I should be better,
its reeaaaly hard to tell who is right and
who is wrong.
But I am in the same boat and its really
hard to keep my spirits up
let me know if this is still happening
with you and if I can help or you can tell
me your progress
thanks

White Tongue, Yeast Posted: 07-18-07 10:15am
Know your enemy. Yeast thrives on sugar.
Stop eating sugar. Life is better without
it. Cut back on starches for a week. Soda
drinks can leach vital nutrients like
calcium from your body. Wine, coffee and
chocolate can prevent the absorption of
vital nutrients. Eat plenty of protein,
including beans, peas and lentils and some
meat if you are not vegetarian, to
normalize your blood sugar. Always eat a
lot of vegetables especially including
leafy greens like collard, turnip and
mustard greens. They contain calcium and
iron. Potatoes, red peppers and green
peppers are great nutrition. Make sure you
are getting some of your iron and calcium
from non meat sources. If your iron falls
low try a bowl of cream of wheat, plain or
dressed up. If you are tired or gassy,
maybe your iron is low. Get your Vitamin D
people!!!!! Many of your nutritional
efforts may be for nothing if you don't
get enough Vitamin D. To absorb critical
nutrients you need Vitamin D. Lack of
muscle strength and control, bone and
joint pain and weight gain can be due to a
lack of Vitamin D. So, get out in the sun,
show some skin and go for a walk,
everyday. The body can regulate Vitamin D
best if it comes from your skin being
exposed to the sun. Notice your stress
float away and depression lift. If you
have trouble getting outside, over the
counter supplements are available, but
don't over do it. 400 to 1000 I.U. is a
good range to work in. If you think you
need more, talk to your doctor. Have your
physician administer a 25-hydroxyvitamin D
test. Specifically for the thrush/white
tongue problem, make sure you are eating
olive oil, garlic, lemon juice and oregano
in your diet as much as possible. They
have antiseptic and antifungal properties
and/or boost your immune system. If you
like hummus, combine a can of chick peas
(rinsed), as many garlic cloves as you can
stand (or garlic powder), a couple of
olives, lemon juice (about 1/4 cup or
more), tahini (sesame paste about 2 tbsp)
and a little water to help the blender go.
Puree in a blender to the consistency you
would enjoy. Chow down with bread or
tortilla chips for a meal or snack.
Vitamin C is great. It boosts your immune
system and aids in proper liver function.
But don't overdue supplements. Too much
Vitamin C from a pill could be too much at
once. Whenever possible, get your
nutrition from food so your body can
regulate how much it takes in. Coat your
tongue with olive oil after a meal and
after you have finished your oral hygeine
routine. I use Pompeian extra virgin olive
oil first cold press. Also, it is possible
the balance of good bacteria in your body
has been disturbed by antibiotics or
alcohol. It may be helpful to repopluate
your body with good bacteria like
L.acidophilus by eating yogurt with such
live cultures. Bacteria eats yeast. If the
good bacteria in your body is low, yeast
will thrive unchecked. Maybe have a little
good quality cheese too, like blue cheese.
But don't over do it. And for your
overall health, change your toothbrush
frequently, like once a month, and never
leave anything on it when you are done. In
fact you don't always need to use
toothpaste. If you want a clean experience
everytime, use a piece of sterile guaze
over your finger, with or without
toothpaste, in place of a toothbrush. I
think it works better. Sometimes modern
medicine will help, but nothing replaces
good nutrition and self care. Go to the
source. Take responsibility. Regain
control. You need to know why you are
craving eggplant or avocados? Look up
what's in them in this nutrition database.
It might be high in calcium or potassium.
Critical nutrients. Potassium helps
mitigate the effects of sodium. Also, you
might not be a vegetarian, but you still
eat vegetables (I hope) and you still need
vital nutrients they provide. Take care
of you like no one else can. Big tip here:
buy, cook and eat lentils from India
called Dal. You can get different
varieties like Moong, Channa, Thoor, Urad,
Masoor and others. They are SUPER high in
calcium, iron and vitamin A. You can cook
them with water in less than 1/2 and hour
and drizzle olive oil on them. Use corn
oil, sliced onions, curry powder and
pre-soaked moong dal to make a delicious
and easy curry on your stove top. Or, look
up some authentic recipes. Super
nutrition. The world is on your doorstep
or at your computer terminal. I believe
healthy food, the sun and exercise produce
the fountain of youth and the gateway to
good health.

Can Someone Make My Mind At Ease? Posted: 10-07-07 07:35am
Hi guys, I had swallowing problem since I
went to the dentist.
Now, I feel my mouth always dry, my tongue
is white and coated.
I feel also that I have something at the
end of my nose or in my throat.
I have eating problems because there is
something in my mouth is not helping me to
swallow. I started having all theses
problems after the dentist, who I hate
now. My tooth wasn't completely okay. I
still had pain for days.
I tried a test that I read on Internet.
AS soon as I get up I spit in the glass of
water and after 15 minutes I check it out.
If it was dissolved, I was quite sure I
had not yeast infection, but It didn't
dissolve, it deposited and it had like
fingers and a spider web.
My ent didn't get it from the my first
visit but the second one, she said to try
the tablet in the mouth, I might have
mouth infection. Is this sound familiar?
do you guys have also swallowing problem?
Like when you try to swallow you feel like
there is something sticky is not helping
you to get your food down and you feel
something stuck in your throat. Is it
normal?PLease help me out!!!!

Stress From Uncertainty Posted: 10-14-07 14:04pm
I've had similar problems only just
recently. Perfectly fine until about 6
months ago. A loose crown led to a series
of dental visits including an extraction
and a protracted cleaning procedure...no
real problems or even tooth aches within
the mouth at all before this, just a loose
crown...now white tongue. Ear ache a
couple of days ago.
One of the problems I have that I feel
others here may share is the absolute fear
of not knowing what specifically is wrong.
As I try to inform myself on the
internet, I inevitably scare myself and
stress out even more. Making a bad
situation much, much worse.
I was never a person that would go to a
doctor unless I was really, really sick.
Now, I have an appointment tomorrow to
deal with recent earache. The question is
: Am I falling apart or is my new found
obsession about falling apart and
documenting it on the internet causing
more symptoms?
2 dentists have told me 100% sure nothing
unusual going on...why am still I worried
about oral cancer....now is oral thrush
something that I have to worry about
forever...besides its cause where might it
lead if...
I may have stressed myself out so
completely that I'm affecting myself
adversely.
Sorry if this seems like rambling. But,
hopeful that everyone here can find the
answers and be well .....calmly.
Stressing out just makes it worse.
