Sugar amounts ?
Posted: 01-03-08 09:10am

How much sugar is too much sugar per day? Like, grams-wise? I ask because I like to be able to have a serving of orange juice, yet there is nearly 30 grams of sugar in just 6 ounces of juice. Is that a lot of sugar for one serving of something?

I suggest that you should take freshly squeezed orange juice and go easy on the sugar. It's not as convenient as orange juice from the carton but you get less calories. 30 grams of sugar in 6 ounces is already a lot considering that a normal individual weighing 150lbs should consume about 880grams of carbohydrates per day, so that will include bread, rice, cereal, and the like. Plus, the sugar you find in juice drinks or soda are empty calories, meaning, they contribute calories but without the nutrients. There's no nutritive value. Go for the real fruits and you'll get vitamins, minerals and fiber from the pulp and forget about adding sugar.

From what I remember way back, I think if you consume 2 pounds of sugar, it is toxic and you will die. I don't know if you meant in terms of being healthy, or just how much one can consume before sugar being toxic.

I just meant that how much sugar is in juice keeps me from buying it, even though I like it. I do have a juicer though...

The sugar in natural oranges or the juice is not something you have to worry about. Just make sure you don't get anything with added sugars or sweeteners.

The reason it is so high is because it probably takes about three oranges to make a serving of juice. Our bodies can recognize and digest the sugars in juice because they haven't been unnaturally separated from their surroundings, like chemically processed sugars.

To digest the processed sugars, the body automatically releases what nutrients it has in order to make it a recognizable and digestible food source. So as we eat processed sugar, our nutrient stores are gradually depleted.

One glass of orange juice a day is very good for you and you should keep drinking it. Grape juice has an even high amount of 40 carbs per serving. If you are worried about how many carbs you have a day for the sake of weight gain and loss, you can always water it down a little.
