starting new pills ?
Posted: 01-06-08 19:29pm

I finished my second pack of Loestrin 24 about 12 days ago and haven't had my period yet. I switched from Yasmin the month before; I started the Loestrin the day after I finished the Yasmin, so I expected to be off last month.

Should I go ahead and start my new pack of pills? I've taken 3 pregnancy tests, all negative.

Yes, why not?

You never have to wait for your period to come before starting the new pack. You will have to wait seven days again before you are protected from pregnancy.

I asked because I'm not on Sunday start; I'm on day 1 start. And if there's no period, there's no day 1.

So? You can start the pills on any day. You don't need your period as long as you know you are not pregnant. The only thing is that you will need to use protection for one full week, then you're fine.

I say this because you waited 12 days, and this basically means you have to "start" all over again. Many forms of birth control make a woman lose her period; this is a common side effect.

Once you start, you will not change the day you take your first pill on. Say you start on wednesday. At the end of the month you have your placebo week (yes, on Loestrin?) and then right away, the next day, start a new pack. It will be wednesday when you start your new pack. That's how birth control works. Loestrin may be slightly different, but the point is this: take all the pills, in order until the end. The very next day, start a new pack!!

--- UNLESS of course your pack happens to not include placebos and tells you to take a week off to get your period. I don't think loestrin is like that though. The longest you should ever wait between packs is 7 days IF THERE ARE NO PLACEBOS, or you lose all of your protection. Follow the directions on the packaging! Once you start, don't stop.

If there are placebos, then take those at the end of the cycle and start a new pack the very next day. I know, it's confusing!!

Oh I see.

It really doesn't matter- the only difference is if you take it any other day but the first day of your cycle you will have to wait seven days before it is effective.

Loestrin 24 only has a 4 day placebo, right? It still has one though, so everything Eiri said is right.

I'm aware of what you are saying. BUT according to package directions for day 1 start: start on the day you get your period or start spotting, not directly after the 4 iron pills. I didn't know when to start because I didn't get my period. My doctor wouldn't call me back so I didn't know if I should wait or go ahead.

But it doesn't matter because I started a new pack.

WKUGIRL-

I am a healthcare professional...

You ONLY use day 1 start for the FIRST PACKAGE of pills, not any consecutive pill packages..

Sunday start and Day 1 start are RESERVED only for the very first pack of pills you take.

You ALWAYS start a new pack when you finish the old package, no matter WHAT.

THIS IS FROM THE LOESTRIN PACKAGE INFO
http://www.loestri n24.com/faqs.php#aboutusing

• Take one pill every day. When the pack runs out, throw it away. Begin a new pack the following day.

BECAUSE you waited 12 extra days, ANY sex you had puts you at risk for pregnancy.

YES IT DOES MATTER, you are not protected from pregnancy.

Your doctor can explain more.

ALWAYS start a new pack of pills when you old pack runs out.. EVEN IF YOU DO NOT GET A PERIOD.

http://www.loestrin24. com/using.php#start

READ the LAST BLUE BOX.

this is what it says

WHEN YOU FINISH YOUR PACK OF LOESTRIN FE, START THE NEXT PACK ON THE DAY AFTER YOUR LAST BROWN(PLACEBO) PILL.

Ok, so I think I misunderstood the question at first. If you're on your second pack, you should've not waited 12 days, you should just have started when you were supposed to regardless of your period.

Never wait around for your period to come before you start taking the pills again, because you will risk your protection from pregnancy that way. Your period will eventually adjust to the pills. And on Loestrin 24, your period will be really light and may not even come eventually.

The day 1 thing was just for the very first pack. Carifairy was right.

Oh, and you will not be protected again from pregnancy until seven days after you started the pills again.

That starting day information is ONLY FOR THE VERY VERY FIRST TIME!!! After that, you don't ever stop taking the pills!!! You should have started whenever you wanted to - you do NOT have to start on your period. Once you get going, never ever stop taking the pills or you lose all protection.

Got it. My doctor gave me wrong information last time and wouldn't respond to my calls this time. I'm a CPhT so I talked to my boss on Monday so I've got the right info this time. I've been on b/c since I was 11 for regulation but I've never been on a 24 day pill nor have I gone from one pill to another so I was unaware that the first month was different.
