Non-hormonal Bc Methods?
Posted: 01-07-08 21:57pm

I am looking for non hormonal or "natural"
bc methods. I just got off nuvaring
because of its side effects, and I have an
aweful history.
I am allergic to spermicide (i break out
and burn)
I am extremely senstive to latex (i break
out in a huge rash and...well dry up
during sex)
And do not want to get pregnant...for
now.
Any ideas? Any natural things anyone has
tested?

IUD. Cervical Cap. Diaphragm. Non-latex
condoms. I'm not sure what the cap or
diaphragm are made of, but I think there
are non-latex versions.

i thought IUD's were hormonal? ive known
several people to get pregnant on them
too...
Ive tried non latex condoms, but they seem
to get....hmmm...ill just be blount, stuck
up there and fall off my bf.
Diaphrams are usually made of latex or
synthetic rubber, my friend had one...im
thinking about it if they arent latex. I
heard fittings are painful though??

The copper coil IUD is 100% hormone free.
IUD's are the most effective form of birth
control aside from sterilization.
My mother never mentioned the fitting as
painful and she used one. She did mention
it was frustrating to remove and my dad
always had to do it. I can't see how it'd
be any more painful than a pap smear.
More lube on the outside of the condom
will prevent it from coming off inside of
you if you're willing to try them again.

oh no....did you say copper? that would
definately be a problem...im allergic to
all metals unless they are gold plantium
or titanium...after surgery i had an
infection caused by inflamation from the
surgical steel... i cant wear silver. at
least not for very long... (*makes it hard
to have earrings or an extensive jewelry
collection)
it runs in my family...my sister and mom
and grandma are all the same.

Well then it sounds like a diaphragm or
cervical cap combined with a male condom
is your best bet.

I'm really allergic to metal too, but my
doc said the copper IUD wouldn't be a
problem.
I'd suggest looking into it, I know a lot
of girls who love it. Really effective
too, more than ANY of your other options.

No, you can take it out whenver you decide
to have children. The max for the copper
one (Paraguard) is 10-12 years I think.
But if you want to take it out and get
pregnant in a year, you can.
It doesn't contain hormones, so no, it
shouldn't make you gain weight. There are
not many side effects.
It is known to make your period worse and
more crampy right at first, but that
clears up, from what I hear.

pregnancy rates? hmmmm...that actually
sounds decent. I am still a little leary
about the copper though.

For the paraguard, side effects are
heavier periods at first and spotting. But
most women don't really report other side
effects, because there's no hormones in
it. And the periods usually clear up. And
it is REALLY effective, like as effective
as male sterilization.

I am wanting to get the copper IUD after
weight gain on the pill/inconvenience of
having to take the pill / don't like the
idea of hormones...
I mean yeah there's a chance it can leave
your uterus and wander around your
abdomen, and you hear about that stuff a
lot online (think about it, are you more
likely to share your experience with
others if it was problem free or if it
ended with you getting surgery?)... but
you can have strokes on the pill.
spermicide increases hiv transmission.
Condoms may cause cancer and the lube on
them increases risk of UTI, which can turn
into a kidney infection and cause
permanent bladder dysfunction. Tubes tied
can cause pregnancy outside the uterus.
There's risks to everything... from what
I've read, IUD insertion from a good,
experienced doctor is pretty risk-free. It
seems like the main risks are in the first
few weeks... if something's going to
happen, it's then. Once you get past that,
you're virtually worry free from what I've
read.
I really really want it, just have to make
sure I am safe with copper (I am allergic
to spermicide and possibly latex over long
term exposure...)

They are all rare risks (lol I never heard
the one about cancer from condoms)
When I got my IUD I had no complications
like that, no infection or perforation or
anything.

I also had horrible problems on the pill
and went off not too long ago. Hubby and I
have been using condoms, but after reading
this thread, I'm deffinately going to look
into an IUD. Thanks!
