Unplanned/unknown Pregnancy And Heavy Drinking
Posted: 01-08-08 15:15pm

I'm pretty stressed here. My Girlfriend had her last period around the last week of November like usual. Since her last period we have binge drank around 4 times usually on the weekends (sometimes almost to/or blackout). She doesn't drink heavily during the week due to work. My girlfriend took a pregnancy test the night before and last night and both registered positive. I know this is definitely not good for the baby. My question is, how bad is this?

I found out i was pregnant at around 8 weeks, and was really worried because I had a couple drinks after school while i did my homework every other night and wasn't eating healthy at all (if you call gulping down 3 Starbucks everyday eating). Such is the life of a university student : )

I asked my doctor if this was bad, and he said unfortunately it can be. There's a greater risk for miscarriage, and development is really fast at first and alcohol can cause problems in early stages. However, he said that many women go through the same thing and have healthy babies.

So far so good with my baby!

I hope she's okay! What's done you can't undo, make sure she eats healthy and takes care of herself from now on!

You should make a dr appointment right away tho if she hasn't already Wink

Good luck with everything.

I found out pretty late into my pregnancy as well and I had a similar lifestyle at the time. My Dr. says baby and I are healthy and everything looks good, I'll find out tomorrow when I get my inducton for sure if my baby is fine. I couldnt undo aanything from the past but when I found out I did everything I could from that point until now to make things right and I believe everything will be fine! Smile Make sure she takes her prenatal vitamens, eats healthy, exercises, drinks lots of water and visits her Dr. reguarly, and all should be fine. Smile Goodluck with the rest of your pregnancy.

Are ya'll choosing to keep this child? If you are immedietly start going to the doctors... be HONEST and open with your doctor about your activities and make sure they are able to register and monitor that! USUALLY but not ALWAYS that early in a pregnancy it shouldnt affect but as logn as you make proper decisions from here on out and are honest with your doctor... it would be alright! Is she on prenatals already? the earlier the better!

update-
I told her i would support whatever decision she thought was right after we took the 2nd preg test that turned out positive. She Had been leaning heavily on the decision of abortion due to her being scared the drinking/smoking harmed the developing child. She saw a doctor who gave her a 3rd preg test that turned out positive also, and who gave her options on abortion. Now after us talking and me letting her know i would be totally happy raising a family together , she has postponed the abortion and we are in the process of finding a doctor that can perform some tests to find the health of the child. I so hope things turn out good.

First i know binge drinking is bad. I am 32 and my girl is 28 so we've seen our share of drinking.
Second drinking is not what i'm posting about. Yeah alcohol may have had some part in it, but we are not binge drinking now.

unfortunately, all that alcohol (whether it was all at once or over a period of time) most likely affected the baby. That young, the baby's spinal column is forming, which is basically the base of it's life. Again, you hear stories where the baby comes out fine when mommy drank a couple glasses of wine before she found out. But there are also the other side where she could either miscarry because the damage is so bad, or baby comes out with some type of defect from it, even if she stops completely now.

I hate being the bearer of bad news, but it definitely is possible baby got some type of damage from this. You really won't be able to tell until it's born or maybe before that, idk the extent of modern medicine on that subject.
