Colon Surgery During Pregnancy Posted: 01-10-08 00:50am
Hi, I had colon surgery while I was 21
weeks pregnant<my entire large
intestine was removed, and I now have an
ileostomy. I was just wondering if anyone
knew what an average hospital stay for
this would be? After my surgery I was
sent home 2 afternoons later without any
antibiotics, and developed peritonitis
within 2 days, ultimately I went into
labor and the baby was stillborn. I was
rushed back to the hospital the surgery
was performed at and they pumped two
liters of peritonitis out of my abdomen,
and this time I was kept in the hospital
almost three weeks. I was just concerned
that they only kept me for that short
amount of time and sent me home without
any type of preventative medicine. Also,
since the surgery my husband and I have
been trying for eight months to get
pregnant with no luck. Does anyone know
if this may affect fertility? This was my
second pregnancy.
Thank you so much for your help

The usual hospital stay is 4 to 7 days
depending on your overall health, on the
extent and type of the surgery performed,
whether there are any pre-existing
conditions that may slow recovery, and
whether there are any complications after
surgery.
Recovery time at home may be 3 to 6
weeks.
The surgeon usually order antibiotics
prior and after surgery to prevent any
infections.
