Should I Join the Military? Posted: 01-11-08 20:09pm
I'm turning 17 in 6 months so I think I'm
a big guy now, lol . I was wondering
if I should join the military in the
special operations for 1-2 years. I have
many pros and cons to joining so I wanted
every1's input.
Pros:
1. I get various benefits from the
government for my service
2. I can learn discipline and other useful
skills
3. I can have the pride of having been
part of the special operations
4. I can help my country
5. I've been working out all my life,
studying, and practicing various warrior
skills, being a specops soldier would be
the next progression.
6. My friend joined the specops as a
pararescue jumper and he says he likes it
and I'm just as mentally tough and fit as
him
Cons:
1. I might have to hurt or kill ppl, I'm
not sure how bad I would feel if it was a
justified war though
2. My friend said the military would push
me mentally and physically until I'm no
longer normal. Would I have trouble
adjusting to civilian life afterwards and
starting a family and would I risk losing
my personality due to the rigorous
conformity of the army?

I would say NO, If you are intelligent
enough don't do it. I know a guy who is 43
and he went through Afghanistan war (with
USSR). He told me "If I start thinking
about how many young kids die in my hands
I would totally lose my mind". He has part
of his right arm missing (so he can only
shake hands with his left arm). He seems
to be a normal person but know him pretty
well and he is pretty emotionally
unstable, military left a great mark in
his life.

just remember, you dont just waltz in and
join the most elite fighting force because
you feel like it. They are the considered
the best because they are the best. Did
you take the ASVAB? I believe you need a
98 or above. What are your pft scores
because if they arent at least 250+ dont
even bother. If you go Army spec ops you
can only go Rangers because you need to be
21 for a green beret, so you would most
likely take basic-AIT
(infantry)-Airborne-R.I.P(considered an
incredibly tough 4 weeks) then if your
lucky and do well enough you will get into
Ranger school which could take at least 2
years. Training could be ongoing for years
on end and unless your ready for that kind
of commitment which it doesnt sound like
you are as you ask for 1-2 years i highly
doubt its for you. If you go NAVY SEALs
thats also increbile hard. BUDs is also
considered to be very difficult with an
extremly high wash out rate. Marine Recon
and Air Force pj's are also near
impossible. Not only do you need the
muscle but you need the will. A large
percentage is mind games, they will break
you down. The movies and discovery
channel's tv shows dont show the half of
it. (sorry if this may sound mean but im
just saying the facts) Also say if you try
to become a SEAL and you wash out, you
could be scrapping paint off the deck of
some ship for the rest of your 4 years.
You also mentioned killing in a justified
war. yes spec ops teams may be involved in
this and that war but a lot of what they
do goes on behind the curtain. You could
be in a country training indigenous forces
as spec ops are just so wide and varied.
Each branch has its own mission sets but
still, take that into consideration and
then talk to your recruiter. Thats just
the devil advocate in me speaking but good
luck and let me know what happens. Im
leaving for basic around the same time but
let me know how things go.

staying alive is hard enough without
someone shooting at you. i think the
military is the ultimate male ideal, but
really, death by car bomb, screw that.

I haven't taken ASVAB, but I got 99th
percentile in PSAT and I have only had one
none A in high school so far, an A minus,
and I'm in all IB classes. I can run a
mile in 5:49, do 70 pushups in a minute,
and swim 50m underwater, bench 180lbs with
a barbell, etc. I think I shud try a shot
at the fitness stuff. My friend's in
pararescue training now and he likes it,
lol
