positive results from BP meds ? Posted: 01-12-08 14:15pm
I had a blood pressure test yesterday at
the dr.'s office and my top number was
running in the low 140's and the bottom in
the low to mid 90's. The nurse said she
suspects the dr. will put me on a low dose
BP med. I go see him in less than two
weeks.
I'm only 37 and this has scared me.
However, I'm tired of feeling not great.
For the past few months, I don't feel
great, but I don't feel really bad either.
I'm tired, lacking in energy and just
generally feel lazy.
I'm not normally a lazy person AT ALL and
this bothers me. So, while I hate the
thought of going on meds, I would like to
feel good again.
With changes in diet and consistent
exercise, and maybe some breathing
exercises, how quickly might I possibly
see positive results? If I do have to go
the meds route, I want it to be a
temporary thing.
Thanks for any input you might have!

Hi, Lexie! Posted: 01-18-08 03:26am
The most important therapeutic goal for
hypertension patients is to be prescribed
a combination of appropriate lifestyle
modifications (weight loss, salt and
alcohol restriction, and increased
physical activity) for 3 or 6 months and
in some cases, the lowest doses of drug or
drugs are added to allow blood pressure
normalization over the long term (in most
hypertensives there is little to be gained
from the pursuit of rapid blood pressure
control).
Since when you have high blood pressure
problem?
Do you have morning headaches?
Are you experiencing dizziness?

Since my last post, the nurse called and
said that the doctor was prescribing a low
dose BP med. He prescribed Coreg 3.125 mg
twice a day.
I'm working on losing some weight. I
don't drink already eat a low sodium diet
and never add salt to anything. I'm
exercise, but lately haven't been as
consistent as I need to be, so I'm working
on that as well. Hopefully this combined
with the low dose meds will make a
positive change.
To answer your questions, no, I have not
had any morning headaches or dizziness.
Not sure how long my BP has been a little
elevated, as I hadn't been to a doctor in
two years.
Thanks again!

You are welcome anytime!
How do you feel these days?
Have you got to the normal blood pressure
readings?
Please, pay attention to physical
activities. Some recent studies have shown
that exercise training lowers blood
pressure in 75 percent of people with
hypertension.
A single workout can reduce blood pressure
for an entire day, and regular exercise
can keep the pressure down for the long
run.
Regular exercise may allow you to lower
the dose of BP meds. When the pressure
isn't too high at the beginning, a
exercise routine may allow you to stop
taking medication entirely.
Talk to your doctor to arrange the
exercise program and schedule that will be
effective and safe.
