ripping, tearing pain in lower tummy
Posted: 01-13-08 18:56pm

Yesterday I noticed this awkward pain in my lower tummy. It was only on one side. The pain increased as i walked but once i laid down, the pain subsided. I have a high tolerance for pain, and I didn't want to be seen by the ER unless i was in some serious pain and i couldn't bare it any more. Well, the pain continued, off and on for about 6 hrs. It felt like a "ripping/tearing" pain. I finally decided that i wasn't going to take any chances and i took a trip to the ER.

Well that was basically a waist of time. Because i am not 20 weeks pregnant yet, if something was terribly wrong with my pregnancy or my baby, they would of just let it happen! They didn't even escort me to the maternity ward because of the same reason - i wasn't 20 weeks yet!

Their theory is - if the baby was born under 20 weeks, the baby wouldn't be able to survive. So they just "let it happen". I can understand if a "miscarriage" was already taking place, but if someone was going into "pre-term" labor, theres medication that would of stopped the contractions ! Now, i don't know how safe that is for someone that hasn't reached the 20 week mart, but when i was asking question about that last night, they didn't have anything to say about the safety of the medication for the baby. Just that, if the medication didn't wok, and the baby was born, it wouldn't be able to survive!

Luckily, all of the tests that where run came back normal. So I'm assuming, that "awkward" pain was just one of the many that come with pregnancy! But i was just a little ticked off that they didn't take me seriously only because i am 17 weeks pregnant!

How ridiculous is that!?!

Yeah I got it too, I didn't know what it was, my doctor says it's this thing that in on your uterus and when your baby grows it stretches beyond anything it is used too, that's why it feels like it's tearing. Tylonel helped sometimes for me.

What the ER doctors told you is true. If you were having a miscarriage, there wouldn't be much they could do to stop it. Even contraction medication might not stop a miscarriage. It's not pleasant, but it's the unfortunate truth.

Thankfully what you experienced is normal and common. Good luck.
