sunscreen and dont stay out too long b/c
of overheating...And dont let ur belly get

Tanning Beds While Pregnant Posted: 06-26-04 10:29am
"there is no evidence that radiation from
a tanning bed would cause harm to the
embryo or fetus. Lights in a tanning bed
emit uva or ultraviolet a radiation,
similar to the tanning rays emitted by the
sun although they are more concentrated in
a tanning bed. Uva radiation is not very
penetrating—clothes can stop it as you can
tell by tan marks when you wear a t-shirt
out on a sunny afternoon. Uva radiation
is not able to penetrate through the skin
and abdominal tissue to expose the fetus.
There is no reason for concern."

Omg!!!!!!!!!!You claim to be nurse and you
are telling girls it is okay to tan in a
tanning bed while pregnant? What is
wrong with you?
No tanning beds while pregnant! You can
tan outside with sunscreen, but be sure
not to burn or overheat. No tanning
beds!
Just because one person does something and
they are okay, doesn't make it okay and it
is very immature and irresponsible to tell
people that it is alright to do something
that is dangerous!

) although not harmful to your baby,
tanning is still harmful to you, so be
aware of the risks associated with
cancer.
2) particularly if you have dark hair or
are prone to cholasma, if you get the
"mask of pregnancy" (cholasma - the
darkening of skin around the eyes, cheeks,
nose that can make you look somewhat like
a racoon) during pregnancy, tanning will
make this condition darker.
3) some tanning salon owners will not
allow you to tan while pregnant or may ask
you to provide a "doctor's note" to do
so.
4) because tanning beds are relatively
new, there have not been any studies done
on the effects of uva during pregnancy, so
all information/advice is theoretical in
nature.
Also:
is indoor tanning the same as tanning in
the sun?
Yes. A photon of uv light is the same
whether it comes from the sun or from a uv
lamp. When tanning indoors, your body
produces a tan in the same manner as when
you tan outdoors. An important advantage
of tanning indoors is that the amount of
uv light you receive is regulated, and
there is greater control of exposure. You
can gradually increase your exposure times
to get a tan, while helping to minimize
sunburn. [back to top]
is it alright to sunbathe outside
immediately before or after I go
tanning?
No. Going tanning before or after
sunbathing outside can lead to
overexposure and possible damage to your
skin. If you have spent considerable time
in the sun, chances are that you have
received significant uv exposure. Jumping
in a tanning bed after a day at the beach
will not make you tan quicker, it will
only increase the chances of a burn, and
the likelihood of damaging you skin.
do I have to wear eye protection when
tanning indoors?
Yes. Your eyelids do not provide adequate
protection from uv light. Although there
may be no immediate symptoms, damage may
be occurring to your eyes which can lead
to vision problems. Always wear eye
protection when tanning--you only get one
pair of eyes. Strict federal laws
require that protection be worn by every
indoor tanner. It’s a must that each
indoor tanner wear protective eyewear that
meets the minimum fda standard. [back

can I tan while I am pregnant?
No. Probably not for the reason you
think, either. It does not have to do
with the "tanning" part of the experience,
as in the uv rays, but rather the heat
produced by the tanning unit. Excess heat
can be harmful to the pregnancy and can
cause complications. You should not tan
while you are pregnant. [back to top]
p.S girls, while looking up "tanning while
pregnant" beware of the some of the sites
that pop up. They are porn and really
nasty!

Did you not even read the information I
provided? It says that there has been no
studies on how uv rays affect a fetus, but
that tanning in a tanning bed is still
dangerous because the risk of overheating.
Yes, there is a difference between
tanning in a bed and outdoors.
Obviously. If you tan in bed it is more
intense and gets quite hot, whereas if you
tan outside on a day where it is not too
hot/humid and there is a breeze, there is
less of a chance of overheating.
Stop misleading these girls. It is very
irresponsible.

Yes there is a differance from lying on a
tanning bed than sitting outside. The uv
lights are more concentrated and the heat
can become intense the longer your in
there. Eight minutes worth of tanning is
a weeks worth of lying out in the sun.
Do you not realise that?
If the question is to do something that
isnt natural to your body for example:
smoking,drinking, sunbeds or drugs: then
the risks are always going to be high.
Thats my theory anyway. I certainly
wouldnt be telling people it's quite
alright to use sunbeds when you just never
know.

as suzi says of course it is different -
do you sunbathe just a few inches from the
source - no.
How do you know the rays from a sun bed
are exactly the same they do not come from
the same source after all. That's like
saying all carrots have the same nutrional
value - i'm sure the ones my grandad grows
are much more nutritional than those I can
buy in a supermarket, but they are still
carrots!
Your eyelids do not provide adequate
protection from uv light <<< now
I always wondered why they gave u cute
goggles (used a bed once - far to sticky
and boring)

When I went to the tanning bed when I was
younger, there was a big sign in all the
rooms that said "do not use tanning beds
while pregnant." what more do you need to
know, dont question it just go with it.

If you are not sure what the outcome will
be,it would be best not to tan while
pregnant. If the research is not conclusive
,why risk the health of your baby for
vanity??Same goes for toothwhitening and
haircolor.If your not sure,don't risk
it.Your baby only gets one chance to
develop healthy, you can be tan, blonde and
whitened afterwards!! patty
