TMD Muscle Tension with no clenching Posted: 01-20-08 11:08am
Hey all
I've posted a few comments before here.
My case of TMD got significantly different
after my bite was changed w/ orthognathic
surgery. I no longer clench my teeth...
which is what everyone suspected the cause
was from the originally bad bite.
However, I still have muscle tension.
This is weird because my teeth do no
clench at all. I really don't need to
wear a night guard anymore to prevent
clenching, but more as a guide for the
muscles. It is as if the joints just
don't articulate well with each other and
all the tension goes into the back of my
head, then down into my shoulders, and
sometimes even into my back and stomach.
I also have numbness in the hands which is
a classic TMD/TMJ symptom. Has anyone
else had similar symptoms? In this case,
it is other muscles that are the problem,
not the ones involved in clenching. This
is really weird... Thanks for your
thoughts

yes i have that as well---id go see a
chiropractor--or if you already do go see
one tell him of these symptoms.
unforutunately a lot of the symptoms and
things associated with tmd are really
weird.

Thanks for the quick reply. Did
Neuromuscular Dentistry do anything to
help these 'non-clenching' muscular
symptoms, specifically back and stomach
tension? It seems like no one ever
mentions these because they must be really
rare. I've been hesitant to go w/
neuromuscular dentistry because I'm pretty
sure the problem is not a relaxed bite,
but the screwed up joints themselves.
I've never seen a chiropractor either. No
one seems to believe me about this stuff,
and I doubt that any chiropractor would.

tmdman, you wrote that "numbness in the
hands is a classic TMD/TMJ symptom." Why?
I've had this for years and was told it
was part of carpal tunnel syndrome. I have
had surgery on one hand and have a mild
case in the other hand.

TMD affects different people in different
ways. Like Dyan said, a chiropractor may
be able to help you. I would also suggest
a mild muscle relaxer when your flare ups
are at their worst. Hot and cold
compresses work well for the muscles too.
These may be tension headaches as well,
you may try something over the counter
such as Excedrin Tension Headache.

sorry i didnt get back to you sooner. yes
it did help with the stomach tension back
tension etc. I use a chiro in conjunction
with the nmd. it works. well any chiro
that wouldnt beleive you isnt worth going
to. my chiro didnt know anything about the
tmj disorders untill i came along and i
basically "educated" him on it. if he
doenst beleive you take in all the info
you can find on it, referr him
here--anythign you have to do.
