degenerative back disease spinal stinious

Confused Ihave 2 herniated disc, degenerative back disease and spinal stinious. i had a neurologist tell me he was going to recommend me for surgery bit when i talked with my pcp he said that the neurologist also said i was not a good candidate. this was very upsetting to me because when i came out of the neurologist office i was very happy that something was finally going to be done about my back. i feel that the neurologist should have told me everything then. what does he mean that i'm not a good candidate. i;m 59 yo, weight 295 lbs,6ft tall non-smoker and non-drinker. even though i'm over weight all the nurses say i care it well and that it should not be a hindrance to back surgery but it might prolong the recovery period. i would like to get this done before i get to old. please advise me as to what to do.

sincerely, larry

Hello Larry,

In my opinion your neurologist should have shared with you what he told your PCP.

My advice - Get a 2nd opinion (and a 3rd too). Seek out the best neurologist/spinal surgeon that you can find. Talk to others you know and get their advice for an excellent neurologist/spinal surgeon. And I would also recommend that you call up a local professional sports team and ask who they use as a spinal specialist for their players.

Okay, to that difficult topic - weight Larry, I commend you for your "positives", however, you know that perhaps it would be a good idea to lose some weight. Think of your back. Do talk with your PCP about this. Okay.

Hope all goes well.

P.S., - I have about the same spine problems as you do. I am 71. I have had two epidural injections and they have really helped me. At this point, even considering my age I'm going to keep the knife away as long as I can. That has been my decision.

First off Larry you need to lose weight. That is probably the cause of your back problems. "Carry it well", doesn't work.

85% of multi level laminectomies fail. You should do IDD. It is 90% effective. Surgery makes most people worse.

LOSE WEIGHT. You are eating double what you should be eating to maintain your current weight.

Hello Balldez,

May I suggest that you try to communicate in a more pleaant manner. Your approach will just turn Larry off IMHO.
