baby nurses only one breast Posted: 01-22-08 00:07am
I can only get my son to nurse on my left
breast, he won't take the right one. I've
tried for a long time, I'm patient with
him even when he is screaming to be fed. I
keep practicing in hopes he will latch on.
He gets so fusterated and in the end I end
up feeding him from my left breast. I also
have been formula feeding... I know I
should stick with one or the other. I'd
like to get him to nurse on both boobs so
he can just rely on my breastmilk, any of
you guys have any advice on how to get him
to nurse on both breasts? I've tried
running my nipple along his mouth and it
works well but only on my left breast,
I've tried dripping some milk onto his
lips with my right breast and he still
won't drink from it. Anyways thats my
issue, any advice would be great,
thankyou!

Do you flip him? as in his on his left
side for your right breast, but his right
side for your left? I'm no expert, but try
different positions. You didn't mention
it, so I'll assume you just have in in
front in a cradle position. Try having him
on his left side and kinda hold him like a
football. I hope that helps a little!

Yeah try different positions. Try the
football hold, that's the only way I could
get Jayden to latch on to my left breast
for the longest time. Sometimes it helps
if you hold him so his right cheek is
pressed against your right breast.
Sometimes this can trick him into thinking
it's your left breast, because when you do
a cradle hold on your left breast his
right cheek is pressed against it.
Also, have you pumped from your right? If
you're too engorged the baby CAN'T latch
on.

I'll try that, I have been just doing the
craddle position because I find it very
hard to hold him well otherwise. See, my
son he jerks his neck around a lot when I
try feeding him, which makes any other
position most difficult, he is way strong!
I will give it a try though for sure,
thanks for the tip.

I'm getting a pump tonight, so maybe that
will help.

do you have a boppy pillow? it can assist
you with holding him like a football. and
pumping from that boob would be better
than the formula in the bottle
good luck!
