lithotripsy or lithotomy ? Posted: 01-22-08 11:56am
Need any information on the above two
procedures, if anyone has undergone such
for kidney stones. Such as: how long
procedure takes, to downtime before
returning to work, pain tolerance if any?
etc! Thanks so much for your input and
time!

Hi
I've had lithotripsy, as for how long it
takes it depends on how many stones and
the size of the stone(s) it usually can
take up to an hour you will be put to
sleep for this procedure.
Most doctors put a stent in you because
pieces (fragments) of the stone will be
lingering in you until you pass them and
the stent will help you pass them without
damaging your ureter tube(s).
Which type are you having done? The laser
lithotripsy or the ESWL (extra corporeal
shock wave lithotripsy)?
Are they going in through the urethra and
bladder or doing it outside the body?
As for pain everyone is different and if
you have a stent in you will feel
uncomfortable with that.
Returning to work is usually within a day
or two, depending on how you are
feeling, how long the procedure was and
what the doctor found.
Lithotomy is when they cut you to remove
the stones and it is also the position
they put you in when prepping for a
cysto.
What size stone do you have?
I hope you are not in much pain.

Appreciate the quick info. This is for my
husband who has had and passed enough
kidney stones to make a necklace and a
bracelet. Bless his heart. He went this
morning and was told if this did not pass,
then this was the procedure they would
have to perform. I was curious as to how
this worked. My brother actually goes from
hospital to hospital with his equipment(
laser) and zaps kidney stones on a daily
basuis...I jsut didn't connect the dots! I
have no idea type/size of stone. I do
thank you so very much for all the useful
information! HUGS!

Your welcome.
I have been getting stones for about 25
years now. I understand the pain all to
well with them.
Good luck to your husband, my husband and
son also get them...UGH!!
