Has anyone had to have this done???

Amniocentesis: the removal of a small amount of amniotic fluid (the water surrounding a developing baby) from the uterus. The procedure is done in a doctor's office or hospital clinic, usually when a woman is about 16 weeks pregnant.

I'm just looking up random info on pregnancy and whatnot and I was wondering if anyone has had to do this. I'm a little scared Confused

I've heard of it before...I actually think a friend of mine had it done, but I can't remember. It's in my biology textbook, if you want me to get up and check? Razz

I have had 2 with my first pregnancy, and then never again and i'm on baby #4. Under most circumstances you shouldn't ever have to get one. It wasn't exactly painful, but it was a VERY strange feeling. The shot on the tummy to numb it did hurt. I had mine at about 36 weeks, so there was no chance of it hurting him at that point.

I went into labor with him around 5 months along, so I had been getting steroid shots on top of the meds to stop my labor. The amnio was to make sure his lungs were mature before they let me go into labor.

The whole thing was really overwhelming, I was only 18, and I was SO afraid because I knew nothing and it had been years since my mom had been pregnant. Oh and thanks so much ^^ We just found out that baby #4 is a little girl i'm so thrilled to have 2 of each =D

i had it done ( i was 17 at the time) because i had a high hormone level which is sometimes a symptom of downsydrom in the baby, so i had the amnio to make sure Reese didnt have it.. and he didnt thank god! it also can tell you the sex of the baby... which is how i knew for sure i was having a boy... it did hurt im not going to lie but it wasnt that bad, it would have been better if i was calm

I had it done because I was advanced maternal age (35). They do an ultrasound just before the procedure and during to be sure the needle isn't going to poke the baby. They are also measuring certain points on the baby's body which are sometimes tell tale sounds of disorders. All of that came back great, so technically I didn't need to have the amnio done, but for peace of mind I did. I thought the needle hurt more coming out than it did going in.
I would advise not looking at the needle, because it is big and kind of intimidating. Take deep breaths and know it isn't going to last for long.

Unless they have discovered your baby is high risk for something (downs syndrome, etc), this will not be a procedure you will need to have done.

You look pretty young so advanced maternal age won't be a factor in your pregnancy.

I think that's the only thing in pregnancy I dread. Unless I go into early labor, I shouldn't have to have one. I watch baby shows and I've seen it done, it's scary looking, I won't lie. It looks very uncomfortable and I've seen one woman bleed from the poke because he had to move the needle once he got it in *shudders*.

Why did the doctor advise an amnio?

I opted out of that and all the other genetic screening. My dr asked me if I wanted it and she said that the only reason would be if I would terminate the pregnancy if something was wrong with the baby. I said no so she said that it is completely unnecessary.

I don't know, he was pushing for me to have that & all the other genetic testing.

Weird. Seems like there would have been a reason.

I know clubbed feet runs in my family, maybe he wanted to check for that? I don't know what all the amnio tells you, it's been forever since I've read up on any of that..

But you don't need to know a child has clubbed feet prior to birth. They don't get surgery for quite a few months. It isn't necessary to know at birth.

Amnio looks for all genetic abnormalities.
