vertigo, numbness, losing bits of time Posted: 01-23-08 16:05pm
This is going to be a long one...
About a month and a half ago I started
having vertigo. I've had low blood
pressure issues in the past, but this felt
different. Instead of everything getting
brown or fuzzy, everything tilts down and
to the left. I don't get any nausea, but I
do get a headache right behind by eyes
just after an episode.
For about a month my ears have been
ringing frequently.
Also for about a month, I've been having
problems with numbness. If any of my limbs
stay bent for more than a few minutes,
they go numb. If I straighten, feeling
returns. Sometimes they don't even have to
be bent, but in these cases the numbness
lasts several hours, up to a day.
I went to the doctor, and she thought it
looked like I had a sinus infection, so
she put me on a decongestant and a nasal
spray. She put me on meclizine for the
vertigo, and told me to get a multivitamin
and a b-complex vitamin for the numbness.
The vertigo doesn't occur when I'm on the
meclizine, but the numbness hasn't
improved after 2 weeks and the ringing
still happens a lot.
But now new things are cropping up. I get
the sensation and visual sign that I'm
going to have a migraine, but no pain ever
occurs. I haven't been nearly as hungry as
I usually am, and a few times a day I have
a strange metallic taste in my mouth
(which is probably from the vitamins).
There are some times when it's like I just
"turn off," I get suddenly and
overwhelmingly drowsy. I could sleep all
day when this happens, and I never feel
rested. Waking up can be a struggle, like
I'm swimming through a fog, and often I
can't become fully awake until the
drowsiness totally stops.
But the one that scares me has only
happened a few times. I'll have to give an
example to explain this:
My boyfriend walked into the bedroom while
I was laying down watching tv. I told him
that his pj's were in the bathroom, so he
would have to go get them. He walked
toward me and started to change, and I
said, "Wait, remember? Your pj's are in
the bathroom." He looked at me strangely,
and replied, "I already went and got
them," and then he held them up to show
me. I was totally baffled. As far as I had
seen, he never left the room!
This has happened a few times since.
Without realizing it, I lose 15-30
seconds. I'm afraid to go to public places
or drive for fear of it happening again. I
have a doctor's appointment in a few days,
but I'm afraid I'm going to sound like an
fool who's trying to fake a disease or
something when I talk to the doctor.
I had tuberculosis when I was 3 (and
hearing loss from the aminoglycosides),
and Bell's palsy when I was 7. Don't know
if this adds anything.
Can anyone help? I'm confused and getting
worried...

Sounds like you could be having seizures.
Go to a neurologist.

maybe you got what my dad has Posted: 04-17-08 00:34am
My Dad has been suffering with severe
vertigo, strange feelings, complete
disorientation, off-balance etc etc.
After years and different doctors with
different opinions hes finally been
diagnosed with Meniers disease (not sure
if spellt right) meneers, maniers...sorry
not exactly sure how to spell it. Anyways
he got all sorts of medicines pescribed to
him. Only thing hes found that actually
really helps when he feels he might have
an attck is chewing on fresh ginger. Hes
no herbal fanatic but it works and im sure
you dont have to eat it raw, you can also
have it with hot water+honey+lemon, give
it a go, worth a try i reckon. All the
best!!!Oh and my Dads deaf in one ear and
goes deaf in the other when hes unwell.
Weirdly enough i get similar feelings of
vertigo, underwater hearing feelings but
only when im stressed. Stress also sets
my Dads off, no idea if hereditary.

Your story sounds almost like my fiance's.
He went to the doctor in early January and
was told he had a sinus infection and
bronchitis. Those symptoms went away, but
a week later he woke up in the middle of
the night severely dizzy and with a
pounding headache. He gets ringing in his
ears and describes his vertigo as a wavy
feeling, almost like he's on a boat.
He spent 10 days in the hospital in
January...been to numerous doctors and has
now developed complete numbness in his
right arm, the feeling hasn't come back in
over a month.
He is on meclizine too, but still gets
dizzy spells while on it.
No doctor seems to come up with an answer.
The newest development is that he's having
migraines and that's causing all the other
symptoms.
Please update us on what on what your
doctor says and we will definitely do the
same for you.
Good luck!!!

Have your fiance mention meniers disease
when he goes doctors next and tell him to
give eating fresh ginger a go. It doesnt
sound like thats what you have though.
The vertigo does but not the numbness. Id
go back and maybe get a second opinion.
Hope you both get healthy soon!!

ooops sorry, just realised your not the
person i answered originally. Definately
have him mention it to his doctor. My Dad
got meclizine too i think but it made him
feel sick. The problem with Meniers
disease, theres no direct cure and you
just have to work out a way to live with
it. In my Dads case, it was too much
stress at work that were causing his
attacks to the point that he had to stop
working full-time. He still gets the
vertigo and deafness but knows that when
it starts he just has to go home and take
it real easy for a few days, munching on
ginger. When hes had the full-blown
attacks hes literally just dropped to the
floor with so much vertigo he doesnt know
where his head or feet are, difficult to
explain, just severe dizziness with
everything moving. Keep me up-dated and
all the best.

How long does vertigo last? I have had
vertigo for over a year, also noticed loss
of long range memory? Is there a cure or
does this just go away on its own? I have
also broken out with circular hives on my
chest stomach and top portion of my back.
I have a few hives on the creases of my
arm and legs. I'm not sure these are
associated. PLEASE HELP!
