severe pain in hand but no surgery Posted: 01-25-08 15:12pm
My mom got carpal tunnel from working as a
lunch lady, they sent her to the dr's and
after many appointments they gave her a
shot of cortazone (sp?) and it helped
alot. Well we figuared they could just
keep giving her the shots because it
helped.. but when we went in the dr said
it was a one time only thing and the next
thing he would do is sugery. So he set her
up for a test to show she had carpal
tunnel. Well when he was explaining it to
us he said she has weird nurves, and the
test couldnt prove she had, or didnt have
it.. He said he was 80% sure she had
carple tunnel and the surgery would help.
So he let us go home and think about it
for a while. She decided she wanted it,
because her hand hurt so bad, and she cant
do really anything with them now. When we
called back and tould them, they had said
that because the test didnt prove she had
it, they wont do the surgery...
Its so hard seeing her in so much pain,
she doesnt do alot of the things she used
to and it gets her realy down.
Does anyone have anysugestions? Maybe
another way to prove she has it?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

just a thought.... Posted: 01-30-08 03:10am
I can understand the pain your mother is
going through.... I have Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome in both hands for 16 weeks and
recently was told I have tarsal tunnel in
my feet. Just a thought but maybe the
injection was too close to the time of the
EMG test for accurate results. Do some
research and find the best orthopedic,
hand surgeon near you to better advise you
what to do. I've been on meds, wrist
braces, laid off work, and injections over
the coarse of 16 weeks and my surgeon
said still wait another 3 months for
another check up to see how I'm doing....
They wait as long as possible and last
resort for surgery because it's only
60-75% chance of success and might even
make thing worse.
I know
it's not much but I hope it helps.
PS. my doc told me they can do cortisone
injections once every 3 months (not just a
one time thing) so also check on that too!

Is she seeing a neurologist?
She can always seek a second opinion from
another doctor!

She could only go to the dr the workers
comp would pay for, she went to alot of
diffrent ones though, and she has seen a
neurologist.
We were thinking that it was the shot that
made her results come back wrong. because
he did the test shortly after he gave her
the shot, maybe a couple weeks after. We
tould him thats what we thought it was,
and that she should get tested agian but
he didnt think that was it.
She's had the braces, and had to quit her
job because of it, they were paying for
the dr visits until the dr said he couldnt
do the surgery because of the test
results, and they just gave up on her!
Maybe i can find another dr that will do
the corisone injections more than once, i
think if it helps than why not do it. its
better than surgery. Im not to fond of
her dr, he just didnt seem to care alot.
Thank you for your reply, ill talk to my
mom about it.

Hi,
sorry to hear about your mother but have
you thought about joint supplements that
will promote joint permeability and
support. My mother had something similar,
her hand would cramp up sometimes and
really hurt. I researched the internet and
found Micosamine, some supplement made
from dehydrated cows milk.
Here are some studies in case you were
interested.
Hope this helps .
