heavy smoker with multiple TIA's Posted: 01-28-08 17:06pm
I am after a bit of advice right now and
maybe some confirmation of my concerns.
My mother is 85 in April and has been a
heavy smoker - a pack a day for over 60
years. She has also been diagnosed with
early stages emphysema. She had a
suspected tia a few years back and is on
low dose aspirin, but never had any formal
tests. Last Sunday evening, about
midnight, she had a stroke, and she was
rushed to the hospital. The nurses kept
calling it a TIA as most of her muscle
functions improved somewhat. She was then
moved to another hospital for
rehabilitation and two nights ago had
another one. She was put on oxygen
immediately and seems bright again.
Do you think she might have more of these
TIA's? I know each one is doing a little
more damage every time and I am scared
that she will have a major stoke and be
totally debilitated. We have told her
that she can't smoke any more but I know
that as soon as she is released from the
hospital and on her own, the first thing
she will do is light up.
Any support or suggestions would be
helpful.

yes it is possible that she might have
episodes of TIA, and the thing is not all
TIAs are noticable, some of which are just
symptoms like headaches, dizziness and
some mild pain that were usually just
taken for granted. and since some TIA were
unoticed, the next thing is already a
stroke.
you can seek health or support groups for
smokers.
your mom for sure already knows the
effects of smoking to her body, but i
think it wont hurt to remind her of it,
that she is not getting any younger and
even if she might state that she has lived
her life for years of smoking, things
aren't the same anymore, considering that
she has had TIA recently.
sometimes, when they are made aware of the
impending medical conditions, they start
to think and realize that it is not just
actually for thier own, but for the sake
of those people around them that cares for
them, especially thier families...
