I have recently been diagnosed with
depression, but my mom refuses to let me
see a psychiatrist. But I didn%u2019t tell
the doctor everything and I%u2019m scared
I could be a lot worse. I'm 17, have never
taken any drugs; I don%u2019t drink or
even smoke.
I have always been a good story teller
and I can even make myself believe in the
tales I tell to the point that they become
real to me, I%u2019ve spent many nights
terrified by the things I have created.
I have heard voices, before but only a
couple of times, its almost as if its
inside my head but I can hear them.
I%u2019ve also heard voices calling my
name and saying things to me that I
can%u2019t make out, mostly when I%u2019m
listening to music or watching
television%u2026sometimes as part of the
lyrics even though I know it isn%u2019t
there, and sometimes as if somebody was
talking to me.
The delusions are the worst because they
are with me all the time. I believe that
people can read my mind, so I constantly
think in code or just think
%u201C1,1,1,3%u201D over and over again in
my head and believe that there are
thoughts in my head that aren%u2019t mine
kind of like I%u2019m being possessed or
something, among others.
Something that%u2019s has happened lately
and something I have very little control
over is that I sometimes replace words
with other random words. Its scary and
embarrassing, for example I once asked
somebody for a fire extinguisher instead
of my folder, it sounds stupid but It
scared me that I do this so often, I also
make up words, using words that mean the
same thing but aren%u2019t correct
grammar, if you know what I mean.
I%u2019m really scared and I don%u2019t
know what to do%u2026

I have been diagnosed with
schizo-affective disorder and I can relate
with almost everything you have written
about (except the thinking in codes). That
doesn't mean you have it but I think it is
important that you see professionals about
it. Incase it gets worse. Try talking to
your Mum about your worries.
How old are you? If you are over a certain
age it's up to you whether you see a
professional. Could you make an
appointment with your GP?
Schizo-affective disorder (which I have)
comes in two forms, bipolar, or
depressive. I have depressive, which means
my illness is a cross between severe
depression and schizophrenia.
You really need to talk.
I am here in the meantime if you every
need to chat or share experiences. I know
a fair bi about mental illness and will do
my best to help!

I just realised that you said you're 17.
In that case it's up to you whether you
see a professional, not your Mum.
Tell her how worried you are.
I know you might not want to hear this but
I think it's a bit selfish of her to deny
you of the help you need.
You can do it!

I was interested in downtime's description
of hearing voices saying things that she
can't quite make out, and sometimes
hearing things in lyrics, because I
experience this as I am just about to
fall asleep. I usually listen to my mp3
player or sometimes a quiet radio station
to get me off to sleep but at that
'drifiting off' time, the words seem to
take on special significance and I seem to
hear them as voices directed at me. I
believe this is common in the hypnogogic
state and I am just curious as to how
similar that experience is to what
schizophrenics experience.
Downtime also mentioned replacing words
with other random words - is this not
typical of Tourette's?
And finally, is there a stage at which
depression if untreated can slide into
schizophrenia?
I like to visit this forum as I have to
admit to being very interested in how the
mind works.

Hey.
I think drifting off to sleep could be a
little similar to schizophrenia but not as
severe.
Disorganised and incohearant speech is/can
be a symptom of schizophrenia. But yes, it
is also a symptom of tourettes.
I don't know if depression can slip into
schizophrenia but I guess that if you are
stressed enough to have depression, you
could be stressed enough to get other
mental illnesses. Don't quote me on that
because I am guessing here.
There is a chance she could have a mixture
of the two... I do. It's called
schizo-affective disorder, people can
experience schizophrenic type symptoms
alongside either bipolar symptoms or (like
me) depressive.
Hope I helped a tiny bit. I kinda feel
like I have droaned on about nothing x

I think that you should go ahead and tell
your doctor that you need to speak to him
privatly while your mom is not in the room
because you have some VERY IMPORTANT
things to tell him.If you don't tell him
then things will get WORSE .You have to
tell him.I am positive that he will let
you speak to him privatly if you just
ask. It's your health that you have to take
care of and your body and your life that
you are going to be living with and waking
up to every morning.Your mom doesn't
understand how important and dangerous
things can get if you don't seek help. The
doctor needs to know EVERYTHING so that he
can get you the right medicine and
help.Good luck!
